Explanation

We easily believe that our understanding is born inside us. 'This is my opinion, my thought,' we say, claiming it as our own. Valluvar gently tests this belief. The phrase 'manaththulathu pola kaatti', 'appearing as though it lives in the mind', is the key. Understanding seems to be in the mind, he says, but its roots are in the company.

We may compare it to the fruit of a tree. We see the fruit hanging from a branch and so we think the branch is its source. But its nourishment comes up through the root from beneath the ground. In the same way our thoughts blossom in the mind, yet the nutrition for them comes from the words we hear every day and the ways of living we watch. Many opinions we think we reached alone may have come from our circle.

This awareness should lead us to humility. Instead of the pride of 'my view is wholly mine', it brings clarity to ask, 'Where did I learn this?' If the circle in which we grew accustomed to thinking was wrong, our understanding too will have become used to a wrong path. So even before we think, we should choose with whom we think.

There is nothing to be afraid of here, and much to hope for. If understanding lodges in company, we may change understanding by changing company.

This is not a counsel of despair. If understanding lives in company, then a change of company can change the understanding. A person who has been shaped by poor influences can be remade by better ones, and Valluvar plainly hopes that readers will do exactly that.

A story

The Fall and Rising of Ajamila

From the Bhagavata Purana: In the city of Kanyakubja lived a brahmin named Ajamila. He had learnt the Vedas, honoured his parents, and was respected by his neighbours for his good conduct. His mind seemed pure. But one day, when he went into the forest to gather sacred twigs and kusha grass, he came upon a woman of loose ways and the man who was with her. The sight stayed in his mind.

At first he tried to restrain himself. But as he began to spend time with them, he slowly changed. He left his wife and aged father and began to live in that company, forgetting the Veda he had learnt. Robbery and gambling became his livelihood.

Ajamila had believed the understanding inside him was truly his own. Now it became clear that it had stood firm only because of the company he kept. When he lived among the good it showed itself as goodness, and when he lived among the wicked it showed itself as wickedness.

In his old age a young son was born to him. He loved the child dearly and named him Narayana. At the gate of death, when the messengers of Yama appeared before him, he was afraid and called out to his son: "Narayana!" The moment that divine name left his lips, the messengers of Vishnu arrived and held back the messengers of Yama.

In that instant Ajamila's heart awoke and he grieved. He left his wrong company, went to the bank of the Ganga and did penance. In the end, says the Bhagavata, he attained the Lord.

This is also a tale of redemption: however low a man may fall, his heart can awaken in a moment, and his first act on awakening was to leave his wrong company.

His understanding had seemed to be his own, yet its dwelling was his company. When the company changed, the understanding changed too.
