Explanation

This verse tells the grave outcome of leaving duties undone through forgetfulness or negligence. Deeds praised by the wise are dharma, duty and good work. They must be done with care; for those who neglect them there is no good through 'ezhumaiyum', however many births they take, says Valluvar.

'Pugazhndhavai' are deeds honoured by the wise. What the good in each age value serves as a measure. Learning, help, justice, truth and dharma are of that kind. Doing them is not just pride but a duty.

'Potrich cheyal vendum' is to practise them with care rather than carelessly. Not only leaving them undone but doing them negligently is wrong. Starting a good deed and forgetting, postponing it, not realising its importance, all come under this.

The phrase 'ezhumaiyum il' is a strong warning. It is not a punishment of one birth but a consequence that continues. In the Tamil tradition there is a belief that karma continues through many births. According to that belief, one who forgets duty loses good and keeps suffering.

Its practical sense: do not postpone a good deed to tomorrow and tomorrow, but do it at once. The regret that comes later is about the deed not done. Our mind often sinks in petty things and makes us forget righteous acts. We must meet that with vigilance.

This verse awakens our sense of duty.

A story

King Nriga and the Cow Given Twice

From the Bhagavata Purana (Tenth Skandha, chapter 64): One day in Dwaraka the Yadava boys found a huge lizard in a dry well. It had a body like a mountain. However hard they tried, they could not lift it out. They ran to Krishna and told him. Krishna came and easily pulled the lizard out with his left hand.

At Krishna's touch the lizard took a shining celestial form. He introduced himself: "I am King Nriga, of the Ikshvaku line, a donor who gave thousands of cows to brahmins." Surprised, Krishna asked, "How did such a virtuous one become a lizard?"

Nriga told his story: "Once I gave a cow in charity to a brahmin. The cow strayed back and mixed with my herd. I did not notice. My servants gave that cow in charity to another brahmin. Both brahmins argued that the cow was theirs."

"The first brahmin asked for the cow back. The second refused, saying it had been given by me. Both came to me. I offered many thousand other cows in exchange. But both refused and went away, wanting that very cow. The sin of giving twice through my negligence accrued to me."

"After I died I went before Yama. He asked, 'Will you experience your merit first or your sin first?' I accepted the sin first. So I became a lizard and lay in this well for many years." Krishna blessed him and instructed the world that a brahmin's property must be carefully guarded.

Nriga mounted a celestial chariot and went to a higher world. But one small lapse of attention had troubled him for a long time.

It is a good example that even while doing a good deed, if attention lapses it may become a harm.
