Explanation

This verse teaches a mental technique for curbing pride. When joy swells and pride arises, one should remember those who were ruined by forgetfulness and negligence, says Valluvar. By that, the mind realises its position and gains vigilance.

'Magizhchiyin mainduRum pozhdhu' is the time when strong pride appears out of joy: when through victory, wealth and fame one begins to think himself invincible. It is at just that time that forgetfulness attacks most.

At that time he says, 'ikazhchiyin kettaarai ulluga'. History has many who were ruined by forgetfulness and negligence. There are stories of mighty kings, great rich men and famed warriors who fell through neglect. Thinking of them reduces our pride.

This is a psychological practice. Remembering others' falls does not spoil our joy; it protects it. It helps us stay steady without being intoxicated by joy. The humility "this may happen to me too" creates vigilance.

This custom exists in our culture too. Remembering ancestors at victory celebrations, taking others' failures as lessons, and reading the stories of fall told in texts reduce pride.

So at the peak of joy it is wise to pause a moment and recall the warnings of history.

The tales our ancestors told are not mere entertainment; they are warning bells. If we keep them in memory, they will ring when pride arises.

A story

Nahusha Who Fell Through Pride

From the Mahabharata (Udyoga Parva) and the Bhagavata Purana: Nahusha was an excellent king of the famed lunar dynasty. When Indra hid himself because of the sin of killing Vritra, the heavens were distressed without a leader. The devas and sages, considering Nahusha's merit, seated him in the post of Indra. He had the merit of a hundred sacrifices.

Once he received the Indra post, Nahusha was deluded by joy and power. He forgot his station. He sank in the pleasures of heaven. He saw Indra's wife Shachi and desired her. "All that belongs to Indra belongs to me; she too must be mine," he commanded.

Shachi went to Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods, and took refuge. Brihaspati told her a way: "Go to Nahusha and say you will accept him if he comes in a palanquin borne by sages." Arrogant Nahusha agreed. He called the Saptarishis and made them carry his palanquin.

Swollen with pride in joy, Nahusha wanted to go faster; saying "Sarpa! Sarpa!" (Quick! Quick!), he touched and kicked with his foot the sage Agastya who was carrying the palanquin. Angered, Agastya cursed, "Wretch, you will become a serpent and fall to the earth." In that instant Nahusha fell from the Indra post and dropped to the earth as a python.

For hundreds of years he suffered as a snake. At last he was freed by Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma. There Nahusha told his story: "I was made proud by power and forgot dharma. So I fell."

When pride swells in joy and power, recalling Nahusha's fall will protect us. That one with fame and merit fell through a moment's pride is a clear warning.
