Explanation

In the previous verse he said negligence ruins fame; in this verse he says the negligent have no fame at all. He also gives a witness: that scholars of all kinds in the world have accepted this as a single conclusion.

'Eppaal noolorkkum' refers to scholars of every branch. Scholars of ethics, of politics, of medicine, of warfare and of trade, in whatever field, all agree that negligence is evil. Even schools that contradict one another on many ideas unite on this one. So it is a firm 'thunivu', conclusion.

'Pugazhmai' is the quality of earning fame. It comes from the success of one's work. For success in any work, memory and alertness are needed. If a physician forgets the dose, an engineer the calculation, a king the guard, a teacher the lesson, they cannot gain fame in that field.

That is, this verse points to the basic requirement of fame: vigilance. Though one has skill, wealth and power, one without vigilance will fail in the end and lose fame. So those who desire fame must first practise vigilance.

Because it is such a general truth Valluvar calls it 'thunivu', an unquestionable conclusion. One who holds this conclusion will not allow room for negligence.

In school, office or home, those who gain a reputation for reliability are those who remain vigilant.

A story

The Owl King Undone by the Crows

From the Panchatantra (Kakolukiyam): Crows and owls were enemies. The king of the crows was Meghavarna; the king of the owls was Arimardana. The owls were strong at night. One night they besieged the crows' nest and killed many crows. The crows were afraid. Meghavarna called his ministers and asked their counsel.

Among the ministers an old crow named Sthirajivi proposed a stratagem. "Pluck my feathers, make me bleed and throw me near the owls' cave. I shall join the owls and learn about them." So it was done. The crows pretended to attack their own elder.

Sthirajivi approached Arimardana and said, "I was minister of the crows. They tormented me thus. Now I shall serve only you." The owl king believed him. Some owl ministers warned, "Do not trust the enemy." But the king had lost attention in the joy of his victory and his feeling of safety.

The crow stayed in the owls' cave and learnt their secrets, routes and ways of feeding. Little by little it brought firewood and piled it at the cave mouth. In a few months a great heap of firewood grew at the entrance. The owls asked no question about it.

One daytime, while the owls slept, the crows came with torches and set the heap of firewood alight. Fire spread through the cave. The owls could not rise and escape, and burned to death. Arimardana too perished.

The owl king lost his caution because he had strength. Though he kept the enemy near, he did not test him. The story shows that a famed king too is destroyed by negligence.
