Explanation

This verse explains the evil of negligence through a simile. As poverty always spoils a man's intellect, so negligence always spoils his fame. Both do harm slowly and steadily.

Why does poverty spoil intellect? One struggling in poverty, immersed in worry about food, clothing and shelter, loses time and mind for learning, thought and inquiry. The growth of his intellect is obstructed. This is not intelligence being absent but the usefulness of intelligence being reduced.

In the same way negligence spoils fame. One may have done many good deeds and gathered fame. But if at a crucial moment he forgets and errs, that fame turns into disgrace. One small lapse can destroy years of labour.

Here the word 'nichcham' means 'always'. If poverty always spoils intellect, negligence too always spoils fame. That is, this is not an accidental result but a certain one.

The depth of the simile lies here: as one fears poverty, one must fear negligence. As one strives to remove poverty, one must strive to remove negligence.

Those who desire fame can prevent negligence by memory, notes, plans and trusted assistants in their actions. That is practical wisdom.

Valluvar's lesson is that as we labour to overcome poverty, so we must train ourselves to overcome forgetfulness.

A story

Nala's Single Lapse

From the Mahabharata (Vana Parva, Nalopakhyana): Nala, king of Nishadha, was virtuous, brave and handsome. He had learnt the Vedas, upheld truth, and was skilled in horsemanship and cooking. He came to know Damayanti, princess of Vidarbha, through a swan's message and married her. They lived happily. Nala's fame spread everywhere.

The evil power Kali and Dvapara came to Damayanti's swayamvara. Because Damayanti passed over the gods and chose Nala, Kali grew angry. "I shall seize Nala and bring him down," he vowed. But since Nala had no flaw, Kali could not enter. For twelve years he waited at the gate.

One day Nala forgot to wash his feet before the evening worship. By ritual rule he should wash his feet and worship in purity. But Nala, in a little haste, sat to worship without washing his feet. It was a very small lapse. But Kali had waited for just that moment. In the gap of that forgetfulness he entered Nala's body.

After Kali entered, Nala's mind clouded. A desire arose in him to gamble with his brother Pushkara. He gambled and lost his kingdom and wealth one after another. However much Damayanti pleaded, he did not stop. It was Kali's rule that spoiled his mind, but the opening was given by his forgetfulness.

Nala lost his country, lost his clothes and wandered in the forest. He was separated from Damayanti. Bitten by a snake and changed in form, he served as charioteer under the name Bahuka to Rituparna, king of Ayodhya. So he suffered for many years.

Later Nala learnt the art of Akshahridaya, drove out Kali, rejoined Damayanti and regained his kingdom. But the loss he suffered before that recovery was very great. A small lapse tossed a king's fame and life about for years.

The story of Nala is a forceful testimony from our Bharata tradition of how negligence ruins fame and wealth.

What small routine, a check, a ritual or a promise, do you skip when hurried, and what could slip in through that gap?
