Explanation

Two faults are joined in this verse. The first is 'inaththaatri ennaamai', not consulting those who belong to one's circle. The second is 'sinaththaatrich cheerudhal', acting through anger. Commentators take 'inam' to mean kinsmen, ministers and friends. 'Ennudhal' means to think things through and also to deliberate. So both senses, thoughtless action and action without counsel, meet here.

A decision taken without counsel is like walking a path with one eye bandaged. When an error occurs there is nobody beside to correct it. Then the king flares up and blames others for his failure. That anger leads to still worse decisions. In this way a cycle forms of error, anger and more error, and wealth shrinks slowly. 'Thiru' means not money alone; fame, prosperity and support are all included.

Good counsel does not reduce a leader's freedom; it widens his view. What one person cannot see, another sees, and with many eyes the blind spots shrink. That is why kings kept a council of ministers and families listened to their elders. Anger, as elders say, is a temporary madness, and the decisions taken in it are mostly decisions one regrets. So waiting a little when anger rises, and talking to someone trustworthy, are habits that protect fortune and name.

Today, if the head of a family or a firm decides alone without asking, and then rages at those around him when the result is poor, the same cycle follows. A good leader asks before deciding, and when failure comes he first examines himself. Prosperity stays with such a person.

A story

Duryodhana Rejects Vidura's Counsel

From the Mahabharata: In the court of Hastinapura, even while he was only the crown prince, Duryodhana decided most things for himself. His envy of the Pandavas grew into enmity. The court had elders such as Bhishma, Drona and Vidura, who urged peace again and again.

When Duryodhana decided to invite the Pandavas to the game of dice, Vidura warned him plainly. 'Prince, this will bring ruin on the family; give up this thought,' he said. Dhritarashtra too did not listen. Duryodhana refused the advice of the elders and took only his anger and envy as guides.

After the dice game the Pandavas went into exile. When they returned, Krishna came as an envoy of peace. Even when asked, 'Give at least five villages,' Duryodhana flared that he would not give even land the size of a needle's point. Bhishma and Vidura explained again, yet he refused and held to his rage.

In the war of Kurukshetra, Duryodhana's eleven akshauhini army fell. His brothers, friends and teachers all fell. The wealth called thiru left him completely. When the war ended he stood hiding alone beside a pool.

His wealth lay not in the palace treasury; it was wasted in rivalry against the Pandavas. The prosperity of the land, the lives of his brothers and the loyalty of his friends diminished one by one, until nothing was left.

That is the end of one who acts only in anger and does not reason with his own people. Valluvar's 'sinaththaatrich cheerit chirukum thiru' was fulfilled completely.
