Explanation

'Thaalaanmai' means the quality of ruling by one's own foot, that is, by effort. 'Velaanmai' bears two senses, farming and helping others, and the sense of helping fits here. 'Cherukku' here is not evil pride but the full joy that comes from helping.

What Valluvar says is simple: to help others one must first have something. It may be wealth, knowledge or bodily labour. Effort makes it. A person without effort has nothing to give. So the root of giving is effort.

The word 'thangitre' matters. It means this joy dwells in the quality of effort alone. Commentators compare farming and effort, noting that the farmer feeds the whole world by his labour. That reading too adds sweetness to the verse.

Commentators differ on the meaning of the word 'velaanmai' in this verse. Parimelazhagar explains it as 'doing good to others'. Some take it as the trade of farming. The two senses may be joined: the farmer feeds the world by his labour, and that is the highest benefaction. Thus the double meaning gives the verse its beauty. Helping and working are one act seen from two sides: the hand that serves is the hand that has first toiled.

Many who serve today help through their labour. For a person's help to last, the labour must not stop. The verse's message is that one who longs for the joy of helping must first learn to work.

A story

Ilaiyankudi Mara Nayanar's Service of Labour

In the Periya Puranam, the story of Ilaiyankudi Mara Nayanar shows the dignity of service that comes from labour. Born in a farming family at Ilaiyankudi, Maranar made it his life's aim to feed and honour devotees of Shiva. What he gained by ploughing, sowing and reaping his field he gave in plenty to the devotees. His wife stood beside him in this service.

Times changed. His wealth shrank and bitter poverty came. Yet he did not leave his labour, nor feeding devotees. One night a heavy rain fell. There was no food in the house. Then, the Purana says, a Shaiva devotee stood at the door; devotees believe it was the Lord himself in the form of a devotee.

Maranar welcomed him and seated him on the verandah. Then he asked his wife, 'How can we feed the devotee?' She said, 'The paddy seeds we sowed in the field this day will lie floating at the edges of the field in the rain. If you bring them we can cook.' In the darkness and rain Maranar went to the field and gathered the seed paddy in a basket. His wife took dry sticks from the roof of the neighbouring house to light the stove, prepared rice and cooked it, and she picked greens from outside.

When the meal was ready, Maranar called the devotee. Then the devotee vanished. The Purana says Lord Shiva appeared with Uma on his bull and granted the couple liberation.

Note here: Maranar served by his labour. Even in poverty his effort did not slacken. Going to the field in the dark and rain is the sign of that effort. His life is the joy of service that rests in 'thaalaanmai ennum thakaimai'.
