Explanation

For 'pori' commentators give two senses. Parimelazhagar and others take it as the good opportunity or good fortune that comes by fate. Others take it as instruments, the five senses or facilities. Whichever is taken, the idea is one: that circumstances did not favour a man is not his fault.

The great charm of this verse lies in its humanity. Valluvar does not blame the one who failed. One born in poverty or lacking tools and means is not to be blamed. But one who has knowledge, who knows what must be done, and does not do it, that is the fault. The word 'arivarindhu' indicates a state of having known and understood.

This gives two lessons to two kinds of people. To the one whose circumstances are adverse, it says, 'Do not be ashamed of your situation; only do not give up effort.' To the one with means, it warns, 'If you waste your knowledge and means, that is your blame.'

In today's world we easily criticise others' failures. Here Valluvar gives another measure: measure not the result but the presence of effort. One who tried and lost need not be ashamed; the one who knew and did not try should be.

A story

Arjuna's Dejection at Kurukshetra

This is the scene with which the Bhagavad Gita begins, in the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata. On the battlefield of Kurukshetra the two armies stood face to face. Arjuna asked Krishna to halt his chariot between the two armies. Seeing in the opposing army his grandsire Bhishma, his teacher Drona and his kinsmen, his heart was shaken. He cast down his bow. 'Krishna, I will not fight. What is the use of victory won by killing kin?' he said and sat down.

Arjuna was not ignorant. He had learnt the scriptures of dharma; he was of royal birth; he knew how much the Pandavas had tried to avoid this war. The situation too was in his favour. Yet he drew back from action. Then Krishna counselled him: 'Arjuna, this faintness does not befit you; it will spoil your fame. Cast off this small weakness of mind and rise.'

Krishna explained the philosophy of karma. Do the action; do not cling to its fruit. Leaving a duty undone is also an action; it is a form of sloth. 'The self is indestructible; your duty stands before you,' he made clear. The dialogue went on through eighteen chapters.

At the end Arjuna said, 'My delusion is cleared; I shall act as you say,' and took up his bow again. Note: Arjuna did not fail. But Krishna made him feel how great a blame it is to leave action although one knows.

This is a direct example of 'arivarindhu aalvinai inmai pazhi'. Arjuna's confusion was not from ignorance but from a delusion that made him unable to act though he knew. Only when he crossed it did he do his duty and rise.
