Explanation

As the closing verse of the chapter, Valluvar places his boldest idea. 'Oozh' is past deeds or fate, which many believed sways all. But Valluvar says that one who strives unceasingly will conquer even fate and see its 'uppakkam'. 'Uppakkam' is the back side; it indicates fate turning defeated and showing its back.

Commentators have two views on this verse. Some say effort wholly overcomes fate. Others read more gently that though fate stands as an obstacle, effort reduces its force and gives some benefit. In either reading Valluvar's confidence rests on human resolve.

Two words matter here: 'ulaivindri' and 'thaazhaadhu'. 'Ulaivu' is dejection of mind; 'thaazhchi' is delay in action. Effort that goes on without either will conquer fate; not by one day's frenzy, but by steady labour that continues each day.

There is a logic in this verse being the close of the chapter. The first verse began with 'arumai udaiththendru asaavaamai'; the last ends with 'ulaivindrith thaazhaadhu'. Beginning and end both stress unwavering effort, so the chapter completes as one circle. The verses between explain the causes and fruits of that steadfastness.

The verse is not against religious faith. It may also suggest that effort is itself a form of grace. In our tradition there is the belief that penance and service can change even fate. So this verse stands as the close of the chapter and the summit of hope.

A story

Markandeya's Unwavering Worship

The Sthala Purana of Thirukkadavur and the Markandeya Purana tell this story. Sage Mrikandu performed penance towards Shiva wishing for a child. The Lord asked him, 'Do you want a dull son who lives a hundred years, or a wise son who lives sixteen?' The sage chose the wise son. It became fate that his son Markandeya would live only sixteen years.

From childhood Markandeya grew in devotion to Shiva. He learnt the Vedas and scriptures. When he knew that his life was but sixteen years he was not afraid; he continued Shiva worship every day without break. His parents were grieved. But he believed, 'Shiva alone is my support.'

When the sixteenth year came he was worshipping at Thirukkadavur, embracing the Shiva linga. The messengers of Yama came to take his life. They could not approach him. Yama himself cast his noose. The rope encircled the Shiva linga along with Markandeya.

Then Shiva emerged from the linga and kicked Yama away, the Purana says. For that he is called Kala Samhara Murti. He granted Markandeya the boon of being sixteen forever. The tale continues that Yama too later bowed to the Lord.

In this tale the end that fate had clearly set is believed to have been changed by unwavering worship and continued effort. It is a religious form of 'oozhaiyum uppakkam kaanpar'. The lesson is that Shiva's grace stands by the one who persists.

What can I try once more today instead of dismissing it as fate?
