Explanation

'Idukkan varungaal nakuga' is the master phrase of this chapter. To be told to laugh when trouble comes is at first surprising. But 'nakuga' here is not only open laughter; it is the expression of inner calm and clarity. Weeping and lamenting before trouble does not remove it; instead our strength and clearness of thought decline. So the smile is the first weapon we set before trouble.

For 'aduththoorvadhu' commentators give 'approaching and destroying' and 'mounting and trampling'. As one mounts a horse and controls it, so one should mount trouble and tame it. We should not let trouble control us; we should control it.

The verse does not deny the reality of trouble. The smile is not a pretence that trouble does not exist. Trouble is real; but our mind need not become its slave. In that gap the smile is born. Laughter here is not the show of a broken heart but the sign of a steady one.

Human experience bears this out. Even those who faced disaster recover sooner if they keep their sense of humour. If one in a family smiles calmly, the fear of others eases. When a leader smiles, the army gains confidence. That is why the verse stands in the Arasiyal section.

In today's life we droop even at small troubles. One failure, one word, one loss shakes us for days. Valluvar's lesson is simple: at the first moment trouble comes, hold the mind still, take a deep breath, and smile. That moment is the first step to winning over trouble.

A story

Rama's Unchanging Face

The Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana shows a rare scene. In Ayodhya, Dasharatha decided to hold Rama's coronation. The whole city was decorated and the people were immersed in joy. But on the prompting of the maid Manthara, Kaikeyi asked Dasharatha for two boons given earlier: that Bharata be crowned and Rama be sent to the forest for fourteen years.

Shocked, Dasharatha fell in a swoon. When Rama came to his father's palace, the king was unable to speak. Kaikeyi told the news to Rama directly. Here Valmiki gives a beautiful description: when Rama heard he would be king the next day, his face did not swell with joy; when he heard that he must go to the forest now, his face did not wither. The poet says it stayed calm like the autumn moon.

Rama said with a smile to Kaikeyi, 'To keep my father's word is my duty. I shall do it this very day.' He bowed to his mother Kausalya and took leave. He consoled Lakshmana, who wept and raged. Sita stood firm that she would come along. He resolved to live in the forest fourteen years.

The people followed him weeping. But Rama was not shaken. In the forest he built a leaf-hut, lived on fruits and roots, and protected the sages. When Sita was separated from him his grief showed, but his firmness and wisdom took him all the way to Lanka.

This episode is the high example of 'idukkan varungaal nakuga'. Rama's face, balanced both at gaining and losing a kingdom, is the face of one who conquered trouble by mind. His smile became the first sign of his strength.
