Explanation

This verse touches the psychology of trouble deeply. Most of what we grieve as trouble is because the pleasure we expected did not come. For one who excessively desires pleasure, when it does not come the pain looks big. 'Inbam vizhaiyaan' does not mean one who utterly hates pleasure; it means one who is not frenzied for pleasure.

The second condition is 'idumbai iyalpu enbaan'. One who knows that trouble is a natural part of life is not bewildered when it comes. He has the clarity that the path nature gives to our life joins light and dark. That clarity lessens the sharpness of trouble.

Commentators note a small difference. Some take 'inbam vizhaiyaan' as one who does not seek worldly pleasure, and so think of renunciates. Others hold that householders too can attain such maturity of mind. The second view suits today.

Its use in our life is great. In today's society every advertisement tempts us that pleasure is our right. So even a small hardship looks like a great trouble. If we loosen our attachment to pleasure, daily difficulties become small.

So the way of this verse: enjoy the good, but do not become its slave. Accept beforehand that bad will come. Then trouble cannot break you.

A story

Bharata at Nandigrama

The Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana shows Bharata's ascetic life. After Rama went to the forest, Dasharatha gave up his life in grief. At that time Bharata was at his maternal uncle's house. Hearing the news he hurried to Ayodhya. Learning what his mother Kaikeyi had done, he was very angry and rebuked her. 'I do not want this kingdom; it belongs to my elder brother,' he refused.

Bharata, with the people of Ayodhya and the armies, went in search of Rama to Chitrakuta. He fell at Rama's feet and begged him to return to the country. But Rama resolved to continue his forest life to keep his father's word. Bharata received Rama's sandals, carried them on his head and returned to Ayodhya.

Bharata refused to live in the palace of Ayodhya. Outside the city, at a place called Nandigrama, he built a hut. He placed Rama's sandals on the throne and ruled in their name. He wore bark clothing, wore matted locks, slept on the ground and lived on roots for fourteen years. He did not touch royal pleasures.

Each day he waited for the day Rama would return. He had vowed to enter the fire if Rama did not return when the time was over. Separation from his brother was great trouble. Yet he accepted it as natural, stood firm in duty, and lived in peace.

When after fourteen years Rama returned, Bharata performed the coronation. Bharata is the height of 'inbam vizhaiyaan'. Though royal pleasure lay at his feet, he did not seek it. Because he accepted trouble, trouble did not destroy him.
