Explanation

The previous verse said that effort is the root of helping. This verse shows the other side through a simile. 'Pedigai vaalaanmai' is the state of one who holds a sword but lacks the courage to use it. The sword may be sharp, but in a timid hand it does not frighten, does not serve, and the enemy may easily snatch it.

In the same way a man without effort may wish to help but cannot. He has no resources, or if he has, no labour to protect them. So his giving does not last. The verse's subtlety is that a good heart is not enough; the strength to fulfil it is also needed.

Commentators differ a little here. Some take 'pedigai' as femininity, but in today's view it is better understood simply as the hand of one without courage. The simile is not about gender; it speaks of action without boldness and practice.

So the first qualification of giving is a good heart and the second is the labour that fulfils it. If the two do not join, the gift ends half-way; that is the conclusion of the verse in plain terms.

In our lives too we meet those who wish to help; yet promises without labour end only as words. Only when the heart that wants to give joins hands that labour does the gift become real.

A story

The Rich Man Who Only Gave Promises

In a small village on the Kaveri's bank lived a wealthy man named Subburaman. Every year he announced that he would give annadanam at the village temple for the Panguni Uthiram festival. He would also say he would desilt the temple tank and paint the gopuram. The villagers trusted his word and were glad.

But he left his lands to hired hands and never went to the fields himself. He did not look at the accounts. He took no effort to raise or protect his income. In time the workers cheated, the harvest fell and debt accumulated. All the temple works he announced remained announcements.

The day of Panguni Uthiram came. There was no rice for annadanam at the temple. The tank stood choked with mud. The people murmured. Then the temple priest Vedamoorthy said, 'Sir, your heart is big, but your hand does not labour. There is a sword, but no strength to lift it.'

Subburaman felt ashamed. That night he did not sleep. The next day at dawn he took up a spade himself and went to the field. He also called the young men of the village. All together desilted the tank. That year he personally attended to his lands. The next year the harvest grew. At the following Panguni the annadanam really took place.

This event became a lesson for the villagers. They understood that the wish to give is not enough; the courage to labour is needed. That day it became clear to them that giving without labour, like a sword in a timid hand, goes to waste.
