Explanation

In the Tamil tradition, Valluvar here speaks of Thirumagal, goddess of wealth, and her elder sister Mudevi. 'Maamugadi' is one of Mudevi's names. 'Thaamaraiyinaal' is the goddess seated on the lotus. The verse says these two have different dwelling places: Mudevi dwells in sloth; Thirumagal dwells in effort.

By the word 'enpa' we know this is not Valluvar's own claim but a traditionally told belief. Taking that belief, he uses it to convey the worth of effort. This is not against faith in the divine; it makes it a moral lesson. It shows where one who worships the goddess of wealth should look for her: not only in the blooming lotus but in the labouring hand.

Some commentators describe Mudevi harshly as the goddess of evil. Others say she is the goddess of stillness, rest and sluggishness. Either way, the purpose of the verse is not to scorn or exalt either goddess but to make clear the difference between effort and sloth.

In our life there is the custom of sweeping the doorstep, drawing the kolam and lighting the lamp. It is not for beauty alone; elders say the goddess of wealth likes early waking and labour. This verse explains the meaning of that habit.

A story

Churning the Ocean of Milk

This is the tale of the churning of the ocean of milk told by the Vishnu Purana and Bhagavata Purana. By the curse of Durvasa, Indra and the gods lost strength and wealth. The asuras seized heaven. The gods appealed to Vishnu. He told them a way: make peace with the asuras and churn the ocean of milk to obtain nectar.

Taking Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope, the gods and asuras began to churn. When the mountain sank into the sea, Vishnu took the Kurma avatar, as a tortoise, and bore it. For many years they pulled from both sides and churned the sea. It was not easy; their bodies tired and the venom-breath of the serpent scorched them.

First the Halahala poison rose from the sea. When it frightened the world, the Purana says Lord Shiva swallowed it and held it in his throat; he became Neelakantha. In some Puranic traditions it is said that after this Jyeshtha, Mudevi, arose, and only after her did Lakshmi arise. This is not found in all Puranas; it is in some traditions only.

At last Lakshmi came forth holding a blooming lotus. She wedded Vishnu. Next Dhanvantari appeared with the pot of nectar. Thus for those who kept up the effort, wealth and nectar came after poison and trouble were crossed.

The lesson of the tale is clear. Where unceasing effort goes on, the goddess of wealth appears. Had they stopped churning when the poison came, she would not have come. This is the Puranic form of the verse line 'thaalulaan thaamaraiyinaal'.
