Meaning

O ancient Truth, older than the most ancient things! O you whose nature is to be new even beyond all that is new! We, your glorious servants who have you as our Lord, will bow at the feet of your devotees and belong to them alone. They alone shall be our husbands. As they lovingly tell us, so we shall serve them as servants. Our King, if you grant us this, we will lack nothing at all. O our maiden!

Explanation

'Older than the most ancient, newer than all that is new' are among the most famous lines in Thiruvasagam. The Lord is beyond time: older than everything before, newer than everything after. The Gita calls him both 'the ancient' and 'the eternal'.

The aim of the pavai vow was to win a good husband. But here the girls pray, 'let devotees of Siva be our husbands'. It joins worldly life and holy life: even within the household, service of Siva must go on.

The Column of Fire at Annamalai

Once Brahma, the creator, and Vishnu, the protector, argued over which of them was greater. As the argument turned into a fight, a vast column of fire rose between them, its base and its top beyond sight. A voice said, 'Whoever first finds its base or its top is the greater.'

Vishnu became a boar and dug down through the earth, deeper and deeper, searching for ages, and never found the base. Brahma became a swan and flew up and up, and never found the top. On the way he met a thazhai flower drifting down and asked it to bear witness that he had reached the summit. Vishnu admitted defeat and bowed; Brahma lied. Then Siva appeared from the heart of the column. He declared that Brahma would have no temples for his lie and that the thazhai flower would not be offered to him, and he received the humble Vishnu with grace.

That fire later cooled into a mountain, Annamalai, and in its memory a great flame is lit on the summit every Karthigai Deepam. Manikkavasagar was staying at the foot of that mountain when, in the Margazhi dawn, he heard girls waking one another and singing on their way to bathe. In their voices he heard devotees waking each other to the love of God, and he sang Thiruvembavai. That is why the verses speak of 'the Mountain whom Vishnu could not know and Brahma could not see' and of 'the lotus feet of the Lord of Annamalai'.
