Meaning

He is the holy water in which we bathe with joyful shouts, so that the sorrow of birth that binds us may perish; he is the Dancer who dances holding fire in the little Hall of good Thillai; he plays at guarding, creating and hiding away this sky, this earth and everything. Speaking of his glory, with our bangles jingling, our long girdles clinking, bees humming over our lovely hair, let us scoop the water of the flower-bright pool, praise the golden feet of our Owner, and bathe in the great spring! O our maiden!

Explanation

Saiva Siddhanta teaches that Nataraja's dance of bliss shows the five divine acts: the drum is creation, the raised palm protection, the fire dissolution, the planted foot concealment, the lifted foot grace. 'Guarding, creating and hiding away' says this.

In the middle of that great teaching comes the girls' bathing, full of jingling bangles, clinking girdles and humming bees. The cosmic dance and a little game in a pond share one verse.

Siva Purana and Linga Purana; Arunachala Mahatmya; temple tradition of Thiruvannamalai

The Column of Fire at Annamalai

Once Brahma, the creator, and Vishnu, the protector, argued over which of them was greater. As the argument turned into a fight, a vast column of fire rose between them, its base and its top beyond sight. A voice said, 'Whoever first finds its base or its top is the greater.'

Vishnu became a boar and dug down through the earth, deeper and deeper, searching for ages, and never found the base. Brahma became a swan and flew up and up, and never found the top. On the way he met a thazhai flower drifting down and asked it to bear witness that he had reached the summit. Vishnu admitted defeat and bowed; Brahma lied. Then Siva appeared from the heart of the column. He declared that Brahma would have no temples for his lie and that the thazhai flower would not be offered to him, and he received the humble Vishnu with grace.

That fire later cooled into a mountain, Annamalai, and in its memory a great flame is lit on the summit every Karthigai Deepam. Manikkavasagar was staying at the foot of that mountain when, in the Margazhi dawn, he heard girls waking one another and singing on their way to bathe. In their voices he heard devotees waking each other to the love of God, and he sang Thiruvembavai. That is why the verses speak of 'the Mountain whom Vishnu could not know and Brahma could not see' and of 'the lotus feet of the Lord of Annamalai'.
