Meaning

O rain cloud! First drink up the sea and shrink it, then rise, dark like the body of the Lord who owns us; flash like lightning as the slender waist of our Lady who rules us; thunder like the lovely golden anklets on her holy feet; bend as a rainbow like her holy brows; and pour down rain, as the sweet grace that she, never apart from our Lord, pours out first for us and for his devotees! O our maiden!

Explanation

The Margazhi vow was also a prayer for rain, for the land's plenty depends on it. In this verse every stage of the cloud is compared to a beauty of the Mother and Father: the dark cloud is the Lord's body, lightning the Goddess's waist, thunder her anklets, the rainbow her brows, the rain her grace.

In Saiva Siddhanta grace is Shakti's own form. As rain falls on all without asking who deserves it, the Mother's grace flows 'first', even before it is asked for.

The Column of Fire at Annamalai

Once Brahma, the creator, and Vishnu, the protector, argued over which of them was greater. As the argument turned into a fight, a vast column of fire rose between them, its base and its top beyond sight. A voice said, 'Whoever first finds its base or its top is the greater.'

Vishnu became a boar and dug down through the earth, deeper and deeper, searching for ages, and never found the base. Brahma became a swan and flew up and up, and never found the top. On the way he met a thazhai flower drifting down and asked it to bear witness that he had reached the summit. Vishnu admitted defeat and bowed; Brahma lied. Then Siva appeared from the heart of the column. He declared that Brahma would have no temples for his lie and that the thazhai flower would not be offered to him, and he received the humble Vishnu with grace.

That fire later cooled into a mountain, Annamalai, and in its memory a great flame is lit on the summit every Karthigai Deepam. Manikkavasagar was staying at the foot of that mountain when, in the Margazhi dawn, he heard girls waking one another and singing on their way to bathe. In their voices he heard devotees waking each other to the love of God, and he sang Thiruvembavai. That is why the verses speak of 'the Mountain whom Vishnu could not know and Brahma could not see' and of 'the lotus feet of the Lord of Annamalai'.
