Meaning

He shares his body with Uma, whose breasts are like caskets of copper; he dwells at Perunthurai of the southern king. It is his nature to melt the hearts of those who reach his feet without wavering. He made that Pandya land into Siva's own world. He is the Father whose matted hair holds the waters of the Ganga. His long anklet-bound feet are bliss. He dwells in the hearts of those who have handed themselves over to him entirely, and he is beyond the beyond. Let us sing of him, O ammanai!

Explanation

'He made that Pandya land into Siva's world' recalls Manikkavasagar's own life. For the sake of this minister of the Pandya king, Siva turned jackals into horses, sent the flood down the Vaigai, and carried earth for a bowl of puttu. Because the Lord himself walked the streets of that country, it became Sivaloka.

'Handed themselves over entirely' is complete surrender, which Saiva Siddhanta calls atma nivedanam: giving up both 'I' and 'mine' to the Lord. In a heart surrendered like that, he lives within. Yet he is also 'beyond the beyond', past the reach of every kind of knowing. He is nearer than near and further than far; that is his nature.

Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam (Paranjothi Munivar), the chapter on carrying earth; Thiruvathavurar Puranam

The Lord Who Carried Earth for Puttu

The jackals that had come as horses turned back into jackals in the night, howled and ran away. The furious Pandya king made Manikkavasagar stand on the burning sand of the Vaigai riverbed. Then the Lord sent a great flood down the Vaigai. Afraid that Madurai would be drowned, the king ordered every household to send one person to carry earth and close its share of the breach in the bank.

In Madurai lived an old woman named Vanthi who made her living selling puttu, steamed rice flour. She had no one. With no one to fill her share, she cried out, 'Chokkanatha!' A labourer appeared and said, 'Grandmother, I will fill your share. Pay me with the bits of puttu that crumble off.' Delighted, she gave him the puttu. He ate it, sang and danced, tipped his basket over and lay down to sleep, and her share alone stayed open.

The king, inspecting the bank, struck the idler across the back with his cane. The blow fell on the king's own back, on his ministers' backs, and on the back of every living being in the world. The labourer tipped one basket of earth into the gap, the breach closed, and he vanished. Only then did the king understand that the labourer was Chokkanatha himself, and he begged Manikkavasagar's pardon. The Lord gave Vanthi release. When Manikkavasagar sings in this hymn of the Lord 'taking wages for carrying earth', this is the story: the one who bears all the worlds came as a hired hand for a poor old woman.

To reflect on

Of all you hold on to as 'I' and 'mine', what could you hand over?
