Meaning

So that I would not sink into a low state like the gods who have lost their way, the Supreme Light guarded me from the illusion of birth and took me. The moment he gave that new red radiance, the 'we' was gone and we became Siva. Let us sing of how that happened, and clap the thellenam!

Explanation

'The we was gone and we became Siva' is release as Saiva Siddhanta understands it. When the sense of 'I' falls away, the soul is united with Siva. Siddhanta calls this advaita in its own sense: like salt dissolved in water, it becomes one, yet the soul is not destroyed; it enjoys the bliss of Siva.

'Gods who have lost their way' are the gods sunk in heavenly pleasures. Heaven too is a state within births; the Bhagavad Gita says that when merit runs out, one returns to earth. Manikkavasagar received a state beyond even that.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam (Kadavul Mamunivar); temple tradition of Thillai

The Lord Who Wrote Down the Thiruvasagam

In his last years Manikkavasagar lived at Thillai. One day a Brahmin came to his house and asked humbly, 'Sir, please recite all the songs you have sung in so many places, and I will write them down.' Manikkavasagar began with the Sivapuranam and recited hymn after hymn, and the Brahmin wrote each one on palm leaves.

Then he asked, 'With the mouth that sang the Pavai, sing a kovai as well.' Manikkavasagar sang the Thirukkovaiyar, and that too was written down. When the writing was done, the Brahmin vanished. At dawn the next day the bundle of palm leaves was found lying on the five-syllable steps of the Thillai temple, and at its end was a signature: 'Written as Thiruvathavurar recited it, by the Lord of the Little Hall.'

The priests of Thillai were amazed and came to Manikkavasagar to ask what these songs meant. He led them into the Little Hall, pointed to Nataraja and said, 'He is their meaning.' Tradition says that in that very moment he merged into the Lord's feet and was seen no more. This is why Saivas honour the Thiruvasagam as a book written by the Lord himself, and why they say that one who does not melt at Thiruvasagam will melt at no words at all.

To reflect on

Do you remember a moment when the sense of 'I' fell quiet?
