Meaning

Siva, so hard to reach for the great gods, for Brahma and for Vishnu, took on a form and came, to the joy of the people of the earth. He glanced at me from the corner of his eye so that the seed of my births was burnt and fell away, and he entered my heart. Let us sing of how that blessing came, and clap the thellenam!

Explanation

'He glanced at me from the corner of his eye': one look from the Guru is enough, and the seed of birth is burnt. Saiva tradition calls this nayana diksha, initiation by the Guru's gaze. A roasted seed never sprouts again; so karma touched by that glance of grace gives no further birth.

'To the joy of the people of the earth' is why he took on a form: so that people living on this earth might be glad. He came not for the gods, but for us.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam (Kadavul Mamunivar); temple tradition of Thillai

The Lord Who Wrote Down the Thiruvasagam

In his last years Manikkavasagar lived at Thillai. One day a Brahmin came to his house and asked humbly, 'Sir, please recite all the songs you have sung in so many places, and I will write them down.' Manikkavasagar began with the Sivapuranam and recited hymn after hymn, and the Brahmin wrote each one on palm leaves.

Then he asked, 'With the mouth that sang the Pavai, sing a kovai as well.' Manikkavasagar sang the Thirukkovaiyar, and that too was written down. When the writing was done, the Brahmin vanished. At dawn the next day the bundle of palm leaves was found lying on the five-syllable steps of the Thillai temple, and at its end was a signature: 'Written as Thiruvathavurar recited it, by the Lord of the Little Hall.'

The priests of Thillai were amazed and came to Manikkavasagar to ask what these songs meant. He led them into the Little Hall, pointed to Nataraja and said, 'He is their meaning.' Tradition says that in that very moment he merged into the Lord's feet and was seen no more. This is why Saivas honour the Thiruvasagam as a book written by the Lord himself, and why they say that one who does not melt at Thiruvasagam will melt at no words at all.
