Explanation

Sages seek release through hard penance, yet it came easily to one devotee. This does not belittle penance; it shows that grace is not the product of penance but the Lord's own choice.

'Set deep in the ocean of devotion' is a lovely image. Many devotees hold that devotion is greater than release. In the Periya Puranam, Sekkizhar says of the saints that they wanted nothing but to worship in love, not even release.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam (Kadavul Mamunivar); temple tradition of Thillai

The Lord Who Wrote Down the Thiruvasagam

In his last years Manikkavasagar lived at Thillai. One day a Brahmin came to his house and asked humbly, 'Sir, please recite all the songs you have sung in so many places, and I will write them down.' Manikkavasagar began with the Sivapuranam and recited hymn after hymn, and the Brahmin wrote each one on palm leaves.

Then he asked, 'With the mouth that sang the Pavai, sing a kovai as well.' Manikkavasagar sang the Thirukkovaiyar, and that too was written down. When the writing was done, the Brahmin vanished. At dawn the next day the bundle of palm leaves was found lying on the five-syllable steps of the Thillai temple, and at its end was a signature: 'Written as Thiruvathavurar recited it, by the Lord of the Little Hall.'

The priests of Thillai were amazed and came to Manikkavasagar to ask what these songs meant. He led them into the Little Hall, pointed to Nataraja and said, 'He is their meaning.' Tradition says that in that very moment he merged into the Lord's feet and was seen no more. This is why Saivas honour the Thiruvasagam as a book written by the Lord himself, and why they say that one who does not melt at Thiruvasagam will melt at no words at all.
