Meaning

Parrot whose words are sweet as honey from the bough, tell me the weapon with which the faultless Lord of Perunthurai conquers his foes. Know this: the weapon he holds in his hand is the trident, by which the hearts of those who receive him melt free of all grime and the three impurities flee.

Explanation

The Lord's weapon is the trident. Saiva tradition explains that its three prongs stand for the destruction of the three impurities. Who are his enemies? Not only demons. The real foes he conquers are ego, karma and maya, which bind us.

This weapon works in a strange way. It does not wound the soul; it makes the heart melt. Dirt cannot cling to a melted heart. The melting that Manikkavasagar describes all through his life is the work of this weapon.

Notice the word 'those who receive him'. The trident sets free those who have accepted him.

Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam (Paranjothi Munivar), Madurai Kandam: the marriage of Thadathagai and the crowning of Sundara Pandiyan

When the Lord Ruled as the Pandya King

King Malayadhvaja Pandya and Queen Kanchanamalai performed a sacrifice for a child. From the sacred fire rose a three-year-old girl, Thadathagai, who was Uma herself. She grew up, was crowned queen of the Pandya land and conquered every direction. When she reached Kailasa and saw the Lord, she recognised her bridegroom.

The Lord came to Madurai as Sundaresvara and married Thadathagai. Then, under the name Sundara Pandiyan, he himself was crowned king of the Pandya land. Wearing the neem garland, raising the fish banner and holding the sceptre of justice, he protected the people. All sixty-four sacred plays told in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam took place in this Madurai.

That is why Manikkavasagar calls the Lord, with such fondness, 'the one of the southern Pandya land'. When he asks about the ten insignia of a king in Thiruthasangam, he is not singing of an imaginary ruler. He sings of the King who truly ruled the Pandya country, and who now rules the hearts of his devotees.
