Meaning

Lovely one with a red beak and green wings, tell me the river of the Lord of Perunthurai, the master who dwells in our minds. Listen, girl: the river of the Lord is bliss itself, which flows down to wash away the impurities of a mind that has risen towards heaven.

Explanation

A king's river is the one that makes his land fertile: the Vaigai for the Pandya, the Kaveri for the Chola. What is the Lord's river? Manikkavasagar names no river on a map. The bliss that flows within the heart is his river.

Saiva Siddhanta speaks of three impurities that bind the soul: anava (ego), karma and maya. As water washes away dirt, the flood of the Lord's grace washes away these malas. Just as the Ganga came down from heaven to purify the sons of Sagara, grace comes down from above. We cannot make it; we can only receive it.

The subtle point is that bliss is not a reward that comes after we are pure. Bliss is what makes us pure.

Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam (Paranjothi Munivar), Madurai Kandam: the marriage of Thadathagai and the crowning of Sundara Pandiyan

When the Lord Ruled as the Pandya King

King Malayadhvaja Pandya and Queen Kanchanamalai performed a sacrifice for a child. From the sacred fire rose a three-year-old girl, Thadathagai, who was Uma herself. She grew up, was crowned queen of the Pandya land and conquered every direction. When she reached Kailasa and saw the Lord, she recognised her bridegroom.

The Lord came to Madurai as Sundaresvara and married Thadathagai. Then, under the name Sundara Pandiyan, he himself was crowned king of the Pandya land. Wearing the neem garland, raising the fish banner and holding the sceptre of justice, he protected the people. All sixty-four sacred plays told in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam took place in this Madurai.

That is why Manikkavasagar calls the Lord, with such fondness, 'the one of the southern Pandya land'. When he asks about the ten insignia of a king in Thiruthasangam, he is not singing of an imaginary ruler. He sings of the King who truly ruled the Pandya country, and who now rules the hearts of his devotees.
