Meaning

Parrot with a beak red as the kinsuka flower, tell me the cloud-capped mountain of the Lord of undying Perunthurai. Think it over and see: it is the mountain that sends out light so that the darkness in the heart departs, and that grants liberation full of bliss.

Explanation

A king has his mountain; for the Pandya it is Pothigai. Everyone knows the Lord's mountain is Kailasa. But here Manikkavasagar does not name it. He tells us what it does: it is the mountain that grants liberation.

The word val can mean both 'sword' and 'light', and both fit. Light drives out darkness; a sword cuts the bonds. As the Lord once stood as a column of fire at Annamalai, his mountain is the form of the light of wisdom that removes the darkness of ego from the heart.

Climbing a mountain is hard. But here the mountain itself sends its light down. Grace always comes down first.

Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam (Paranjothi Munivar), Madurai Kandam: the marriage of Thadathagai and the crowning of Sundara Pandiyan

When the Lord Ruled as the Pandya King

King Malayadhvaja Pandya and Queen Kanchanamalai performed a sacrifice for a child. From the sacred fire rose a three-year-old girl, Thadathagai, who was Uma herself. She grew up, was crowned queen of the Pandya land and conquered every direction. When she reached Kailasa and saw the Lord, she recognised her bridegroom.

The Lord came to Madurai as Sundaresvara and married Thadathagai. Then, under the name Sundara Pandiyan, he himself was crowned king of the Pandya land. Wearing the neem garland, raising the fish banner and holding the sceptre of justice, he protected the people. All sixty-four sacred plays told in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam took place in this Madurai.

That is why Manikkavasagar calls the Lord, with such fondness, 'the one of the southern Pandya land'. When he asks about the ten insignia of a king in Thiruthasangam, he is not singing of an imaginary ruler. He sings of the King who truly ruled the Pandya country, and who now rules the hearts of his devotees.
