Meaning

Lovers who never knew separation from you came beneath your anklet-bearing feet that pour grace, and received the wealth from which there is no turning back. But I do not know any path by which to worship you; I do not know you; I do not even know the knowing that knows you. You who own me, I, your servant, take refuge in you alone.

Explanation

This verse has three steps: I do not know the way to worship, I do not know you, I do not even know the knowing that knows you. Each step goes deeper than the last. In the end he admits the very limit of his knowing.

In Saiva Siddhanta the soul cannot know the Lord on its own. The Lord must make himself known by his grace. In the Sivapuranam, Manikkavasagar himself said, 'by his grace alone I bow at his feet.' Even the knowledge that knows you is your grace.

'Wealth from which there is no turning back' is liberation. Worldly wealth comes and goes; this wealth, once received, stays.

The Blue-Throated Lord Who Drank the Poison for Those Who Sought Refuge

The gods and the asuras churned the ocean of milk to win the nectar of immortality, with Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. As they churned, before the nectar appeared, the deadly Halahala poison rose up. Its heat began to scorch the worlds, and gods and asuras alike fled in terror.

They ran to Kailasa and took refuge in Siva: 'Save us!' The Lord gathered the poison in his hand and drank it. Uma, fearing that if it went down it would destroy the worlds within him, held his throat, and the poison stayed there and turned it blue. From that day he has been Nilakantha, the Blue-Throated Lord.

In Adaikkalappathu, Manikkavasagar speaks of his mind being churned 'like curd in a pot', and in every verse he cries, 'I take refuge in you.' The Lord who drank the poison churned up from the ocean to save those who sought his refuge will not abandon a devotee churned by worldly desire who seeks refuge in him. To protect those who come to him for refuge, he will drink even poison.
