Thillai temple tradition (Chidambara Mahatmya, Koyil Puranam); tradition of the Thillai Kali temple; Thiruvasagam, KandapathuThe Dance Contest with Kali at Thillai
Thillai tradition says that long ago the goddess Kali guarded the Thillai forest. When Patanjali and Vyaghrapada did penance to see the Lord's dance, the Lord wished to come and dance at Thillai. Kali stopped him: 'This is my place. Defeat me in dance and I will give it to you.'
The contest began. Every step the Lord danced, Kali matched. The gods watched in wonder. Then the Lord let an ear-ornament fall, as if by chance, raised one leg straight up towards the sky, and with its toe put the ornament back on his ear. This is the Urdhva Tandava. Out of modesty Kali would not dance that pose, and she accepted defeat. The Lord seated her at the boundary of Thillai and blessed her: 'Those who come to worship me will worship you too.' That is why the Thillai Kali temple stands at the edge of the town even today.
From that day the Lord dances the dance of bliss in the golden hall. Manikkavasagar came from Perunthurai to Thillai to see that dance. The win and the loss of the contest are only play; Kali and Siva are not two. No one who sees the dance is ever the loser, and that is the joy of Manikkavasagar's 'I saw him in Thillai'.
