Meaning

I had taken on a love too great for me to carry; I could not stay with you and praise you every day; I was gripped by a shame I should never have felt; and I was sinking in the middle of the sea. When I caught hold of the great boat of Perunthurai, which no one else could steer, and pushed off, you came and showed me at Kazhukkundram your holy form that cannot be seen.

Explanation

The sea of births and the boat that carries one across are old images in Hindu tradition. Here the boat is 'Perunthurai'. The experience of the guru at Perunthurai is the boat that will carry Manikkavasagar from the sea to the shore. As soon as he takes hold of it, the guru appears again.

'A shame I should never have felt' is subtle. It is the shame of being left alone instead of going with the devotees. But it is nothing to be ashamed of. One who loves naturally feels shy about his own failings, but grace wipes that shame away too.

The Two Eagles of Thirukkazhukundram

Temple tradition says that at Thirukkazhukundram, also called Vedagiri, the four Vedas themselves stood as a hill, and the Lord sits on its summit as Vedagirisvara. This is the story behind the shrine's name.

Two sages asked the Lord for liberation, but they wanted it at once. When the Lord told them to wait patiently, they argued instead of accepting it, and so they had to be born as eagles. Yet the Lord's compassion did not abandon them. Tradition says that every day at noon the two eagles came, circled the summit, took food offered by a devotee, worshipped the Lord and flew away. Many devotees still remember this. Because eagles worshipped there, the hill is called Kazhukkundram, 'Eagle Hill'.

In the Thirukkazhukkundra Pathigam, Manikkavasagar, after waiting until he was ready to hold the grace he had received at Perunthurai, received the vision of the guru again here. The eagles' story says the same: grace is not won by hurry. To one who comes and bows patiently day after day, the guru appears by himself when the time is right.
