Meaning

I was bewildered. At Perunthurai you wiped away my tears and destroyed my impurities. Yet I, a beast ruined by my karma, did not know what would come of me after. Having no place within me to keep your two shining red feet, I was in turmoil. So that I would be troubled no more, you came and showed yourself at Kazhukkundram.

Explanation

Grace came at Perunthurai, but Manikkavasagar had no room to hold it. 'Having no place to keep your two feet, I was in turmoil' is a beautiful way to say it, like someone fretting because a great guest has come home and there is no fit place to seat him.

So the Lord came again. The guru's grace given once is not enough; the guru comes again and again until the disciple becomes ready to hold it. The vision at Kazhukkundram was that second coming.

The Two Eagles of Thirukkazhukundram

Temple tradition says that at Thirukkazhukundram, also called Vedagiri, the four Vedas themselves stood as a hill, and the Lord sits on its summit as Vedagirisvara. This is the story behind the shrine's name.

Two sages asked the Lord for liberation, but they wanted it at once. When the Lord told them to wait patiently, they argued instead of accepting it, and so they had to be born as eagles. Yet the Lord's compassion did not abandon them. Tradition says that every day at noon the two eagles came, circled the summit, took food offered by a devotee, worshipped the Lord and flew away. Many devotees still remember this. Because eagles worshipped there, the hill is called Kazhukkundram, 'Eagle Hill'.

In the Thirukkazhukkundra Pathigam, Manikkavasagar, after waiting until he was ready to hold the grace he had received at Perunthurai, received the vision of the guru again here. The eagles' story says the same: grace is not won by hurry. To one who comes and bows patiently day after day, the guru appears by himself when the time is right.
