Mahabharata, Vana ParvaKaushika and the Righteous Butcher
From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. A brahmin named Kaushika performed severe penance. One day a crane on a tree let its droppings fall on him; at his angry glance, it fell down burnt. His mind swelled with pride in his power.
At a house where he went for alms, the housewife came late, having first served her weary husband. Kaushika grew angry. She calmly said, "I am not a crane. If you wish to know dharma, go to Dharmavyadha in Mithila."
In Mithila, Dharmavyadha ran a meat shop, doing his work honestly and serving his parents as gods. From him Kaushika learned the depth of dharma, and cast off the baseness of his pride.
