Explanation

In the time of separation the hero kept thinking of the heroine. When he returned, wishing to show that love, he said, 'I thought of you.' It is a sweet word. But the heroine's fine mind found a lack in it: if one says 'I thought of you', must there not have been moments of forgetting? One who is always in mind need not be said to be 'thought of'. So she says, 'Then you had forgotten me,' and moves away from the state in which she was about to embrace.

The word 'pullaal' also shows that she was one who was about to embrace. Her heart was longing to embrace; a spoken word stopped her. This is very charming: what the hero said, thinking it a sweet word, prevented the union. The word 'matru' shows the journey of her reasoning. From 'I thought' she reaches the conclusion 'you forgot' in a moment.

The subtlety Valluvar shows here is that those who love hear even the hidden sense beneath a word. Remembering is the opposite of forgetting; 'I remembered' also carries the meaning 'I had forgotten'. In true love there is neither remembering nor forgetting but unbroken presence. The beloved expects such presence.

Commentators take this as the hero telling his friend in wonder. In life too, to say 'I never forgot you' conveys deeper love than 'I thought of you'.

Today we easily write 'thinking of you' in calls and messages. If we consider for a moment the gap beneath that word, there will be more tenderness in the way we say it.

A story

The Husband Returned from Kashi

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a village near Tiruchirappalli lived a farmer named Sankaran. He had to go on a pilgrimage to Kashi with his mother. For three months his wife Kamala looked after the house alone. Every evening she lit a lamp at the doorway and kept watching the road by which he would return.

One evening Sankaran returned with a copper pot filled with Ganga water and the prasad of Kashi Vishwanatha. Kamala's face bloomed. She longed to run and welcome him. In his joy Sankaran said, 'Kamala, at every ghat in Kashi I thought of you.'

Kamala, who had taken one step forward, stopped just there. 'You thought of me? Then say that in between you had forgotten me. I never once thought of you, because I never forgot,' she said. Sankaran stood amazed. The very word with which he showed his love had stopped her embrace.

Sankaran's mother was watching this. She laughed and said, 'Son, your wife speaks better than you.' Sankaran scratched his head and said, 'Kamala, it was my fault; I never forgot you. Every moment I was with you.' Kamala's eyes shone and she smiled softly.

The Ganga water he had brought she first placed before her household deity and bowed. Then the two sat that night talking about the tales of Kashi. From that day Sankaran did not use the word 'thought' at all.

To reflect on

Next time you say you were thinking of someone, what unbroken presence might you say instead?
