Explanation

In this verse the hero, most gently, tries by many ways to soothe his wife's sulk. A sweet word, a loving glance, a small gift, humility, all these he does. But the heroine sees all these in another light: 'You soothe so skilfully; you must have practised like this with others too!' she says angrily. That is, the very grace of the soothing becomes her proof of guilt.

'Neer innneerar aakudhir' means 'you are of this nature'. Here the word 'neer' in 'innneerar' carries the sense of nature or disposition. What she says is: this skill of loving soothing came to you from practising on many.

This is a very subtle contradiction. To count the very effort to soothe with love as a fault is also a kind of love. Its foundation is the sense of right: 'You belong to me alone; you should not be like this with others.'

Commentators take it as the hero saying it with a smile. His feeling is that even a sulk that seems unsoothable in any way is in truth waiting ready to be soothed.

In our lives too, there may come a state in which even a good deed is viewed with suspicion. At such a time the good way is to continue loving with a smile, without arguing. If we are patient, that suspicion too will melt away.

A story

Gangadhara and Parvati

This is a tale based on the Gangadhara form spoken of in the Shaiva Puranic tradition and temple sculpture. Its details vary from tradition to tradition; here we tell its idea with respect.

The Puranas say that when Ganga descended from the sky through the penance of Bhagiratha, since the earth could not bear the force of her fall, Lord Shiva bore her on his matted locks. The Gangadhara form that commemorates that event is found as sculpture in many temples.

A subtlety is seen in those sculptures: Parvati, though standing beside Lord Shiva, is shown slightly turned away, with a sulk, looking towards Ganga. How could she bear Ganga's sitting in Shiva's locks? This is the charm of the artists' imagination, and tradition honours it as a sweet sulk.

Lord Shiva tries in many ways to soothe Parvati. 'Ganga is on my head to protect the world; the one who is in my heart is you,' he says. Parvati lifts her eyes and flares with a smile, 'You know how to speak so gracefully; you must have said the same words to Ganga too.' Shiva smiles.

In the end Shiva takes Parvati into his left half and stands as Ardhanarishvara, says the Shaiva tradition. That form is honoured as the sign of love without separation.

The subtlety of the verse, 'to others too you are of this nature', is clearly seen in this story.

To reflect on

When someone's loving effort to soothe you makes you suspicious, can you let the suspicion rest?
