Explanation

This is another subtle verse about the sneeze. Earlier we saw the scene in which the heroine sat in a sulk and the hero sneezed. Here the hero sneezes, and the heroine, in keeping with custom, blesses him, 'May you live long.' But the next moment her thought changes. By a belief in the Tamil country, one sneezes when someone is thinking of him. So the heroine thinks, 'You sneezed only because someone thought of you; who is it?' and cancelling her blessing she weeps.

The phrase 'azhiththu azhudhaal' is very charming. She wiped out the blessing, and then she wept. The blessing came from love; the weeping came from doubt. In a single moment love and doubt sound by turns in her heart. The hero tells this in wonder.

Here her accusation has no ground. A sneeze is a natural act; but belief gives it a meaning. The verse shows beautifully belief turning into doubt.

Commentators take it as the hero thinking and marvelling within himself. This verse too, like the earlier ones, is an example of the subtlety of the sulk. Its basis is love and a sense of right.

In life too, beliefs can become instruments that test our love. But when they are taken with a laugh, the relationship becomes sweet. We may also see how much love fills a mind that searches for a cause even for a sneeze.

A story

A Sneeze at Aadi Perukku

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

On the eighteenth day of the month of Aadi the Kaveri flowed brimming over its banks. In a town near Tiruchirappalli people gathered on the riverbank, and newly married couples changed their sacred thread of marriage and worshipped Mother Kaveri. In that crowd were Natarajan and his new wife Vasantha. They had been married only a month and a half.

While Natarajan was strewing flowers on the Kaveri's water, he suddenly sneezed loudly. Vasantha at once said, 'May you live long!' Joy was on her face. But the next moment her brow knit. 'Is someone thinking of you? Thinking of whom did you sneeze?' she asked softly.

Natarajan was startled. 'The sneeze just came, Vasantha; nothing else. Flower dust went up my nose,' he said. 'Is that so? But my blessing seems wasted,' she said, turning her face away. Her eyes filled with tears.

An old woman nearby laughed and said, 'Child, how many sneezes does Mother Kaveri hear before her each year! If you seek a cause for every one, there would be no water in the river.' Vasantha looked at her and smiled. Natarajan wiped her tears with his hand and said, 'I sneezed thinking of you alone.'

'Then I give my blessing again,' Vasantha laughed. The two bathed in the Kaveri together and returned. A small sneeze and a small doubt remained as a sweet memory of Aadi Perukku.
