Explanation

The third verse sounds like a command: do. But it is not a threatening command; it is a loving invitation. 'Ollum vagaiyaan' means in whatever ways one can. Not everyone can do the same amount of good; it is enough that each does according to ability. The rich can give through wealth, the learned through knowledge, the poor through labour; each can do virtue with whatever is in his hand.

'Ovaadhe' means without pause. Virtue is not an event for a season but a continuity. Like a stream that runs without a break, good action should flow. Virtue done only on holidays or festival days is fruitful, but the virtue Valluvar wants is the kind that has become a life.

The phrase 'sellumvaay ellaam' is very graceful. It means wherever you go, and also at every opening. Whether you are at home, at the office, on a journey or in the market, there is room for virtue. There is no need to look for a special place to do good.

The word 'seyal', do, is key. Not thinking or talking but doing is what matters. The verse comes alive only when the time spent discussing virtue falls and the time spent doing it rises. Many learned people discuss virtue; few do it.

For our times it is a practical lesson. Giving a hand to an old person on the road, helping a newcomer at the office, planting a sapling: small acts count too. Not waiting for a great opportunity but using the small openings that come is the inner meaning of 'ollum vagaiyaan'.

A story

Karna's Armour and Earrings

From the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. Karna was famed as peerless in giving. Every day at noon, after worshipping the Sun, he gave whatever anyone asked of him. That was his vow.

Karna was born wearing a golden armour and earrings. As long as he had them, no one could defeat him. Indra, father of Arjuna, laid a plan for his son's good. The Sun, who knew it in advance, appeared in Karna's dream and warned him: "Indra will come in the garb of a brahmin and ask for your armour. Do not give it."

Karna said with a smile, "Father, I cannot abandon the vow of my life. I do not wish to live as one who says 'no' to a petitioner. It is better to lose life than to lose fame." The Sun did not press him.

The next day at noon, when Karna had finished the Sun worship, a brahmin came before him. "I want alms," he said. "Ask," said Karna. "I want your armour and earrings." Karna did not even frown. He took a knife, peeled off the armour that was joined to his body and held it out to the brahmin. Blood flowed, but there was a smile on his face.

Indra was astonished. Appearing in his true form, he said, "Your gift will last as long as the world. Ask me for a boon if you wish." Karna asked for nothing. But Indra, for his part, gave him a divine weapon, says tradition.

This is why Karna is remembered as the symbol of giving even today. In his life one sees the highest example of the verse: to do virtue in every way, without a pause, in every state.
