Explanation

The last verse of the chapter on the strength of virtue is a simple formula: what is to be done is virtue, and what is to be avoided is blame. It is a yardstick that simplifies complicated decisions in life. Whenever there is confusion over whether or not to do a thing, this is the question: Is this virtue? Is this blame?

'Seyarpaalathu' means what ought to be done. 'Uyarpaalathu' comes from 'uyidhal', to escape, to withdraw. Here 'orum' is a particle that confirms and emphasises. By these two words the distinction is clear between what must be done and what must be avoided.

The word 'pazhi', blame, is important. It means fault, reproach and ill repute. It includes the disgrace that comes to the doer of an evil deed and the guilt that visits him. The idea is that an unvirtuous act stands as blame even if no punishment comes.

Because this verse closes the chapter, it condenses everything said so far in a single line. The fruit of virtue, purity of mind, not postponing, doing it daily and the matter of happiness all arrive at this final conclusion: do virtue; keep away from blame.

In life it is a compass. Before a big decision, taking a moment to ask whether it would bring blame on me later prevents a great many errors. The verse shows that fear of blame is a mark of self-respect, not cowardice.

This is the end of the Prologue section. Now Valluvar takes us into the house of household life. There too this one compass will guide us.

A story

Vibhishana Who Left Ravana

From the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Rama had crossed the sea and reached the border of Lanka. Ravana's brother Vibhishana, though born in the race of rakshasas, is praised by the Purana as one who loved dharma. In his brother's court he gave a clear counsel: "Brother, hand Sita back to Rama. This is blame, and it will destroy the whole clan."

He first spoke gently, and when Ravana did not listen he pleaded again and again. The others in the court kept silent in fear. Ravana, in anger, insulted Vibhishana and, tradition says, even kicked him in court. "Though you are my brother, you speak on the side of the enemy. Leave this place," he said.

Vibhishana wept for a moment. It is not easy to part from one's brother. But he knew that if he stood on the side of blame he would lose his dharma. With his four ministers he rose into the sky, crossed the sea and came to Rama's camp.

Sugriva and the monkey warriors looked at him with suspicion. "He may be Ravana's spy," they said. Rama asked counsel of Hanuman and the others. Hanuman observed Vibhishana's speech and face and said he could be trusted. Rama said, "I will not abandon one who comes to me for refuge. Even if he were Ravana himself I would give him protection."

Tradition says that Vibhishana was crowned king of Lanka by Rama that very day. After the war he ruled Lanka by the path of dharma. Because he stood apart from his family's blame and on the side of dharma, his memory is honoured even today.

The clarity of what ought to be done and what ought to be avoided shows in Vibhishana's life. Choosing dharma between love and virtue, he is a living example for Valluvar's last verse of the chapter.
