Explanation

This verse strikes directly at the habit of postponement. 'Andru arivaam' means 'we shall do it some day later'. The thought that we may run after work, money and pleasure in youth and do good in old age comes easily to everyone. Valluvar stops it with 'ennaadhu', do not say so.

The reason for the prohibition is clear in the next line: 'ponrungaal ponraath thunai'. 'Ponrudhal' means perishing, dying. At the end of life relatives, wealth and fame do not go with us. The one thing that goes with us even then, without perishing, is the virtue we have done. So the time to begin storing it must not be delayed.

No one knows when death will come. We have no assurance of tomorrow. In such an unsteady life, 'let us see later' is a dangerous hope. The good not done today may remain undone for ever.

Virtue may be thought of as provisions for a journey. One who sets out on a long journey packs food for the road. For the last journey of life, the provision is virtue. It cannot be sought in the last hour; it must be put by little by little, every day along the way.

This is not a verse that creates fear; it is a verse that gives warning with affection. One who does not postpone virtue sleeps in peace each night, for he has done the day's duty on that very day.

In practice, doing a small favour today and not leaving it for tomorrow, asking for forgiveness without delay and saying thanks at once all follow the path of this verse.

A story

Yudhishthira and the Dog That Followed

From the Mahaprasthanika Parva of the Mahabharata. After the war of Kurukshetra Yudhishthira ruled for many years according to dharma. After Krishna's passing he decided that enough of worldly life had been lived. He handed the kingdom to his grandson Parikshit and set out on a pilgrimage toward the Himalaya with his four brothers and Draupadi. A dog followed them.

The mountain path was hard. One by one they grew weary and fell: Draupadi first, then Sahadeva, Nakula, Arjuna and Bhima. When Bhima asked why each had fallen, Yudhishthira gently spoke of their small failings. Without looking back at any of them, he went forward.

At last only he and the dog remained. Indra came in a chariot and said, "King, I have come to take you to heaven in your body; climb into the chariot." Yudhishthira said, "This dog who followed me must also be taken." Indra refused: "There is no place for a dog in heaven." Yudhishthira said quietly, "I do not want a heaven gained by abandoning a life that trusted me."

At that moment the dog changed into the form of Dharma, the god of dharma and Yudhishthira's own father. "Son, in every test you did not abandon virtue. Your compassion has raised you," he said. Indra too praised Yudhishthira and took him up in the chariot.

On a journey where everyone left one by one, it was dharma that went with him to the last. This story shows that. The Dharma who came in the form of a dog is the picture of Valluvar's phrase, 'the companion that does not perish when you perish'.

Yudhishthira did not postpone doing good all his life. That is why he had no fear even on the last journey.

To reflect on

Is there a kindness, an apology or a thank-you you have been saving for 'some day'?
