Explanation

The first verse of the chapter on the power of speech lifts the grace of the tongue as distinct among all excellences. 'Naanalam' is the good that comes through the tongue, speech full of sweetness, truth, clarity and benefit. 'Yaanalaththu ulladhooum andru' means it is not counted among any other excellence. Wealth, beauty, learning and health are excellences, but the grace of the tongue is distinct and higher than them.

Commentators give several explanations why. Some say other excellences may be seized by others, but eloquence is a possession that cannot be taken from a man. Others say that eloquence helps to gain and guard the other excellences. Both fit, because in getting work, making friends and solving problems, skill in speech is the basis.

Other excellences benefit only the one who has them, but the grace of the tongue benefits others too. A sweet word delights the listener, a clear word gives him knowledge, a word of comfort eases his sorrow. So it is a rare excellence that gives good to oneself and others at once.

This is why in our tradition speech is honoured as a goddess. Knowledge, art and conduct all appear through words. The richness of a language shows in the eloquence of the people who speak it.

The verse asks whether the concern we show in seeking wealth and learning is shown in refining our speech. To practise saying every day one sweet word and one true word is the first step in growing the grace of the tongue.

A story

Hanuman's Gentle Words in the Ashoka Grove

The Sundara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana gives a fine proof of Hanuman's eloquence. In the Ashoka grove in Lanka, Hanuman, hidden in a simshupa tree, saw Ravana threatening Sita and the rakshasis tormenting her. After Ravana left, Sita resolved to end her life. At that moment Hanuman wondered how to appear before her.

The text shows his thought: 'I am a monkey. If I speak suddenly she will fear me as Ravana's illusion. I must speak softly and sweetly in human speech.' First from the tree he began to narrate Rama's story in a gentle voice. From Dasharatha's birth in the Ikshvaku line, to Rama's coming to the forest, to the separation from Sita, he told it all calmly.

Hearing those words, Sita was amazed. It was her husband's story; but who was speaking? She looked up. Hanuman came down from the tree and stood with folded hands in humility. When she was afraid, he again said gently, 'Mother, I am Rama's messenger. Here is his ring,' and showed the ring.

Seeing the ring, Sita shed tears. Hanuman's sweet, clear, humble speech removed her fear and sowed trust. He told his identity and Rama's condition in order and at leisure. 'Rama has not slept until he rescues you,' he said. Those words gave Sita life.

This incident shows how great is the grace of the tongue. Hanuman won Sita's trust not by strength but by words. The power to save a life lay in those words. It is a beautiful example of 'naanalam ennum nalanudaimai'.
