Explanation

This verse gives two measures for excellent speech. First, it has the quality of binding the listener; one who hears is drawn to the word. Second, it is such that even those unwilling to hear come to wish to hear it. Even an enemy who refuses to listen will stand and attend to the sweetness of that word.

'Kelaarum vetpa' is making even non-listeners desire. This is not an easy act. It happens only if the speaker has truth, sweetness, clarity, humility and honesty. Speech that forces one to listen comes of strength; speech that makes one willingly listen comes of love. Valluvar honours the latter as true speech.

Some commentators take 'pinikkum' as the bond of love, others as the charm of knowledge. Either way, the idea is that the word sinks deep into the listener's mind. Such speech stays and gives benefit.

We have experienced this in life. The lesson of a good teacher, the counsel of an elder, the song of a poet make us listen without knowing it. They are not listened to from duty but from desire.

The verse gives us a question: do others listen to my speech from duty, or willingly? Valluvar shows that a word joining sweetness and truth opens even an enemy's ear.

A story

Lava and Kusha Sing the Ramayana

The Bala Kanda and Uttara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana tell the story of Lava and Kusha. In sage Valmiki's hermitage in the forest, Sita gave birth to the twins Lava and Kusha. Valmiki taught them the Vedas, music and archery. He also taught them to sing, with music, the Ramayana he had composed. Those boys with sweet voice and clear speech gained the power to sing Rama's story.

When Rama performed the Ashvamedha sacrifice at Ayodhya, Valmiki came there with his disciples. Lava and Kusha sang the Ramayana in streets, in sages' hermitages and in the royal court. Their song bound the listeners. Those walking along the road stopped to listen. Sages and kings understood its meaning and rejoiced. The text says that song gave delight to ear and mind.

Rama too heard that song. He wondered who these boys were who had come to make him hear his own history. He called his brothers and ministers and had them hear the song. For many days that epic was sung continuously in the court. All listened not from duty but from desire.

Even those who had not wished to listen to that song came to wish to. Rama later learned that they were his sons. What made even non-listeners desire was the sweetness of the epic. The boys' humility and sweet voice melted even Rama's heart.

The Ramayana is still sung across the world. The very song that Lava and Kusha sang has spread in many languages and still makes crores listen. It is the lasting witness of 'kettaarp pinikkum thagaiyavaayk kelaarum vetpa mozhivadhaam sol'.
