Explanation

This verse gives three qualifications for winning in debate. First, skill in speech: the ability to state an idea clearly and strongly. Second, freedom from lapse: not faltering or stumbling in the middle of the debate. Third, fearlessness: not fearing the opponent's strength or the greatness of the assembly. One who holds all three is hard to beat.

Of these, fearlessness is most important. Many have knowledge and eloquence yet fear to rise and speak in an assembly. Fear hides their knowledge. Lapse too is a form of fear. When the opponent asks a hard question there is faltering. The excellent speaker stands calmly, thinks, and replies.

Commentators take 'ikal vellal aridhu' as winning in verbal contest. Some link it to a minister's duty in a political assembly. They hold that a minister debating with envoys of hostile kings needs these three qualifications.

The verse does not praise winning in debate alone. One with true eloquence has no wish to insult the opponent. He shows his knowledge and firmness not to lower others but to establish truth.

In today's life too, speeches, interviews and meetings depend on these three for success. We too can prepare well before speaking, put away fear and speak calmly.

A story

Ashtavakra in Janaka's Court

In the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata, sage Lomasa tells the story of Ashtavakra. The child born to Kahoda, a disciple of sage Uddalaka, and Uddalaka's daughter Sujata, from the womb itself pointed out a fault in his father's Veda recital. The angry father cursed that the child be born bent in eight places. So that child was called Ashtavakra, one bent in eight places.

Ashtavakra's father Kahoda went to the court of Janaka, king of Mithila, and lost in debate to the scholar Bandi, son of Varuna. In that place there was the custom of drowning those who lost in debate. Kahoda was submerged in water. At the age of twelve Ashtavakra learned of this. With his maternal uncle Shvetaketu he went to Mithila.

At the palace gate the guard stopped them saying children were not allowed. Ashtavakra replied fearlessly, 'Age comes not by grey hair but by knowledge. I am old in knowledge.' The astonished guard led him to Janaka. When he entered the court with his bent body the assembly laughed.

Ashtavakra looked at them and smiled calmly. 'I thought this was the court of Mithila, but it seems a market of hide-dealers who see only skin,' he said. The assembly fell silent. Janaka respected him and allowed the debate. His contest with Bandi began. Bandi asked riddles in numbers. Ashtavakra answered them and left Bandi without reply.

Because he spoke without lapse, without fear and clearly, Bandi lost. The story says all those drowned by Bandi returned from the world of Varuna, and Kahoda, his father, was among them. This boy is the living example of 'solalvallan sorvilan anjaan avanai ikalvellal yaarkkum aridhu'.

To reflect on

Is there a truth I stayed silent about out of fear that I can speak with courage today?
