Explanation

The word to notice here is 'penaadhu', without caring or tending. Valluvar does not say 'if one insults the great'; he says 'if one behaves without regard for them'. Open abuse is not needed. Plain neglect of the respect and attention that is due is enough to bring the result. Very often we hurt elders and masters of a craft without any wish to harm them, through sheer carelessness, and Valluvar counts even that carelessness as a fault.

'Peraa idumbai' is taken both as sorrow that does not leave and as sorrow that is very great. Both senses fit. Even when a great person has no thought of revenge, the weight of his penance, his standing and his influence can turn into hardship for the one who disregarded him. The phrase 'periyaaraal', by them, reminds us that the trouble comes from the very persons we neglected.

Think of a young employee who keeps ignoring the advice of a senior colleague with long experience. One day he is caught in a serious mistake that the elder had warned him about. Think of a household in which the old are never listened to; the one who never listened later suffers loneliness and regret. Respect shows itself in small habits, and the person who keeps those habits is protected from larger troubles.

A story

The Sons of Sagara and Sage Kapila

This history is told in the Bala Kanda of the Ramayana and in the Bhagavata Purana.

Sagara, king of Ayodhya, began an Ashvamedha sacrifice. The sacrificial horse was to roam the world, guarded by his sixty thousand sons. But Indra stole the horse and tied it in the nether world, close to the place where the sage Kapila sat in deep meditation.

The princes searched the whole earth. Finding nothing, they began to dig into the ground itself. The Purana says that the pit they dug became the great ocean. When they reached the nether regions, they saw a sage sitting with closed eyes, and their horse tied near him.

They did not inquire into the truth, and they did not think of the greatness of a person absorbed in penance. "This is the thief who stole our horse!" they shouted. They ran at him with weapons in their hands. Some abused him, and some made a din to disturb his meditation.

Kapila opened his eyes. At the moment his glance fell on them, all the sixty thousand were burnt to ashes. The look of a man of penance was enough.

Later, Bhagiratha of Sagara's line performed hard austerities and brought the Ganga down from heaven. Tradition says that only when its waters touched the ashes did the princes gain release.

The sons of Sagara were powerful princes. Yet through haste, carelessness and a lack of regard for a great sage, they met a sorrow that did not leave them for generations. The tale reminds us that impatience and pride lead to neglect of the great.
