Explanation

This is the closing verse of the chapter, and it gives a final warning not to offend the great. 'Saarbu' means the supports that hold one up: armies, friends, relatives, wealth, position and boons. 'Irandamaindha saarbu' can be taken as supports that are beyond measure. Valluvar says that even with such huge support one cannot escape the anger of the 'seerar'.

'Seerar' are people of excellence, full of fame, character and conduct. Leave their strength aside; their sense of justice is the kind that wins in time. When their anger is mentioned, we should notice that it is not hatred but the honest indignation that rises against one who has broken righteousness. That is why opposing it is so hard.

We may gather the ideas of all nine earlier verses here. Honouring the great is self-protection. Despising them is like self-destruction. There is no escape by running. Wealth cannot help. A man falls together with his clan. Even high office does not last. Even the biggest supports are of no use. This verse completes the climb of warnings in a single line.

In today's world, some people with many supports think they have a right to wrong others. But no support can stand before the just anger of the good. To live with humility and righteousness as our companions is the true protection.

A story

Ravana and the Curse of Nandi

This story is told in the Uttara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana.

Ravana had performed penance to Brahma and won boons. He bore a boon that gods and demons could not defeat him. He had a mighty army, the fortified city of Lanka, and brothers, sons and powerful commanders as support.

One day, flying in his Pushpaka aircraft, Ravana came near Mount Kailasa. At the gate of Lord Shiva, Nandi, his divine attendant, stopped him and said, "Shiva and Uma are in solitude here. Do not go in."

Ravana, swollen with pride, looked at Nandi's face and laughed in scorn, mocking his monkey-like features. To insult the chief of Shiva's attendants was a grave fault. Nandi, with the force of his penance, was roused to anger.

"The very monkey-faced beings you have mocked will cause the ruin of your Lanka and of your race," cursed Nandi. Then Ravana tried to lift Mount Kailasa itself. When Lord Shiva pressed down with his toe, his arms were trapped beneath the mountain. He cried out in pain, and tradition says that is how he came to be called Ravana, 'the one who wept'.

In the war of the Ramayana, it was an army of vanaras that stood against Ravana. His boons, his armies and the walls of Lanka did not help him.

However many boons, armies and supports he possessed, he could not escape once he had incurred the anger of the worthy. Ravana's tale shows this.

To reflect on

What supports do you lean on, and would they still protect you if you had wronged someone good?
