Explanation

Everyone knows the cruelty of fire. It scorches at a touch and takes life when it burns. Yet Valluvar first admits that some people survive even fire. Then he adds that those who wrong the great do not survive, and so he shows that the anger of the great is worse than fire. It is a comparison that carries force: if anything in the world is more to be feared than fire, it is the wrath of the great.

Fire is only an instrument with no intention. Water can put it out, and a man can run away from it. But the anger of a great person comes together with knowledge and penance, and cannot easily be put out. That is why Valluvar places it above fire as a danger.

The word 'uyvundaam' carries a note of hope. Even a man caught in a fire has a way to live. But for one who is caught in the anger of the great, there is not even that. It sounds frightening, but the inner message is gentle: if one honours the great, the danger never comes.

In our time we see people who insulted their elders or teachers and broke off relations, and later lost friendship, support and guidance together. A greater loss than any loss of money is the loss of the goodwill of a worthy person.

A story

Daksha's Sacrifice and Virabhadra

This history is told in the Shiva Purana and other texts, and in the Kanda Puranam.

Daksha Prajapati, son of Brahma, was a lord entrusted with increasing creation. His daughter Dakshayani was married to Lord Shiva. But Daksha did not regard his son-in-law as the equal of his own high office. Once, when everyone in the assembly rose to honour Daksha, Shiva alone, absorbed in his meditation, did not. Daksha took it as a great insult.

Afterwards Daksha began a great sacrifice and invited all the gods and sages, but not Shiva or his own daughter. Dakshayani went to her father's house anyway. When she heard Daksha speak scornfully of her husband, she could not bear it and gave up her body.

When Shiva heard, he was filled with great anger. From a lock of his matted hair he brought forth Virabhadra, who went with his host to the sacrificial ground and destroyed the rite. The sacrificial fire was put out, many of the gods present were punished, and Daksha's head was cut off.

The gods and sages went to Shiva, bowed to him, and pleaded. The ocean of compassion cooled his anger and restored Daksha to life, with the head of a goat. Daksha realised his fault and praised Shiva, and he received grace to complete his sacrifice.

The sacrificial fire did not burn Daksha. Yet ruin came to him because he had wronged one who was great. The story shows that the anger of the great is worse than fire, and that true humility is what removes that danger.
