Explanation

This verse opens the chapter on perceiving signs. The lover studies the kohl-lined eye of his beloved with great subtlety and sees that it holds two kinds of look. The first look raises the ailment of love in his heart, and the second becomes the medicine that soothes that very ailment. That a single eye should hold both illness and cure fills him with wonder.

Valluvar does not say plainly what the two looks are, so the reader may fill them in by imagination. Some take the piercing direct look as the ailment and the modest, sidelong look as the cure. Others take the first dazzled confusion as the ailment and the sign of affection that follows as the cure. However one divides them, the point is that her eye carries for him a sign that gives hope.

Valluvar here uses the language of medicine. The idea that the cause of the ailment is itself its cure appears again in later chapters, notably in the verse where the beloved alone can heal the pain she causes. The deeper meaning is that in love, the one who wounds is also the one who heals. This is the first step in perceiving signs: the lover sees not only his own pain but also the comfort for it in her glance.

A story

Two Looks on Aadi Perukku

On the eighteenth day of the month of Aadi, people gather on the banks of the Kaveri to thank the river mother; it is a custom of our soil. On that day women tie fresh turmeric threads, offer varieties of mixed rice and worship the Kaveri. On such a day a young man named Aadhavan from a small village near Tiruchirappalli came to the bank with his mother.

There a young woman named Thenmozhi was floating small leaf cups with lit lamps on the river with her friends. Aadhavan glanced at her for a moment. She looked straight at him. That look was sharp. It felt as if something had pricked his heart, and the flower basket in his hand almost slipped. He stood confused.

After a little while she looked again, gently. This time the look held modesty and a shadow of a smile. At once his confusion settled and a coolness spread in his heart. That day he saw that in one eye of one woman there is a look that distresses and a look that consoles.

He did nothing improper. When he reached home he softly told his mother. The mother spoke to the elders. In due time the two families met in the proper way. The two looks that began on the Kaveri bank bloomed at last into the wedding thread. This is a scene from our village culture, and the characters are invented. Perceiving signs also means waiting with dignity and giving way to the family's course.
