Nobility · Kutimai

This chapter describes the inborn rectitude, modesty, conduct, truthfulness, smiling face, generosity, sweet speech and humility of the well-born. Valluvar shows the marks of a noble house: those who will not lower family honour for any wealth, and who keep giving even in poverty.

Introduction

The chapter on Nobility of Family belongs to the Porutpaal, in the section on Kudiyiyal, the miscellany of social life. "Kudimai" means family honour and the eminence of good birth. Valluvar says plainly in other chapters that no one becomes high merely by birth. But the "kudippirandhaar" he speaks of here are those raised in a house where good tradition and good conduct have been guarded for generations. So it is fitting to take kudimai as the heritage of virtues. A family's good name is made by the good deeds of its ancestors, and it is the duty of those who follow to guard it.

The first three couplets list the traits of the well-born: rectitude, modesty, conduct, truthfulness, a smiling face, generosity, sweet speech and non-disdain. The fourth, fifth and sixth say that such people do not give up their nature in any circumstance: not for crores of wealth, nor when poverty comes. The seventh couplet gives a subtle simile: the fault of a man born in a noble house shows to all like the spot on the moon in the sky. The eighth and ninth say that birth is known by speech. The last couplet closes with the essence of the chapter: if you want goodness, you need shame; if you want family honour, you need humility.

In Hindu tradition kuladharma is very important. In the Ramayana the glory of the Raghu line is praised in the traditional saying that it is the custom of the Raghus that life may go but a word given does not. In the Mahabharata the Kuru and Puru lines are witnesses of such family pride. Of dharma, artha, kama and moksha, family nobility is the taproot of dharma.

Some commentators see kudimai as eminence of birth, others only as eminence of culture. Since other chapters of the Kural firmly say "all creatures are alike in birth", the sense of a tradition of virtue in the family is more fitting here. The chapter invites each of us to consider how we guard our family's good name.

This matters in our own time too. Every family has an unspoken tradition: respecting elders, welcoming guests, helping the poor, not telling lies. Passing that tradition to the next generation is the foremost duty of parents. Children learn from what parents do rather than what they say. Kudimai is thus built not by talking but by living it out. Valluvar sees it also as a responsibility rather than a ground for pride, and expects the man of a noble house to behave better than others.

Chapter story

Rama's Exile

In the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana comes a rare episode that shows the glory of the Raghu line. Dasharatha, king of Ayodhya, grown old, decided to crown his eldest son Rama. The whole city was plunged in joy. But the younger queen Kaikeyi, at the urging of her maid Manthara, reminded him of two boons he had once given her. In the first she asked that her son Bharata be crowned, and in the second that Rama go to the forest for fourteen years.

Dasharatha collapsed in distress. He could not break his word, for it was the tradition of the Raghu line to keep a given word. Yet out of love for Rama he could not accept the boon either. Rama saw his father's grief and asked what had happened. Kaikeyi told him everything. Rama did not hesitate in the least. "Mother, keeping my father's word is my duty. I shall go to the forest today," he said. No grief at the lost crown or anger showed on his face.

Rama went to take his mother Kausalya's blessing. She too wept. Lakshmana boiled with anger. "Brother, command me, and I will make Ayodhya yours," he said. But Rama calmed him: "Brother, dharma does not change to suit our convenience. The word of our family must always be kept." Sita wished to go with Rama, and Lakshmana set out with them.

When they left Ayodhya, the townspeople ran weeping behind the chariot. Sumantra drove it. At the bank of the Tamasa they halted for the night, and while the people slept Rama slipped away in the chariot so that they would suffer no more. On the bank of the Ganga the Nishada chief Guha welcomed them warmly, and Rama, having matted his hair, crossed by boat. For fourteen years they lived in the forest in simple garb, eating roots and fruit. Their conduct was always in dharma. Later Bharata returned and begged Rama to take the kingdom. Rama refused without breaking his father's word. Bharata took Rama's sandals, placed them on the throne and ruled in their name.

The tale shows the true meaning of kudimai. Rama gave up crown, kingdom and comfort for the word of the family tradition. As Valluvar says, men of good family would not lower their name even for crores, and Rama did not diminish the honour of his house even for a kingdom. Good birth is to stand without flaw in word and deed. Because of this decision the people of Ayodhya honoured Rama all the more. When he returned after fourteen years, the whole city shone with lamps, and tradition says we celebrate that day as Deepavali.
