Explanation

This verse gives a powerful simile. As the sun dries and torments a boneless worm, dharma will torment a man without love. A boneless worm is unprotected; the man without love is the same.

'Enbiladhanai' is a creature without bones, a worm. As bone gives firmness to the body, love gives firmness to the mind. A man without it is weak within.

'Veyil' is the heat of the sun. A worm survives in shelter; if it comes out in the sun it cannot bear the heat. In the same way the loveless cannot stand before dharma and suffers. His own deeds burn him.

Here 'aram' may be seen as the punishment of Dharma. In simple words, dharma naturally punishes the loveless. This is not only outward punishment but also inner: guilt, loneliness, unrest of mind.

It may seem that when the loveless harm others they feel no pain. But in time he becomes isolated and no one trusts him. He grieves at the consequences of his own acts.

This need not be taken as a threat of revenge. It can be taken as a natural law of dharma. A life lived without love by itself creates suffering.

In the Bhagavata, Kamsa is a terrible example of this.

A story

Kamsa Without Love

The tenth book of the Bhagavata Purana tells the story of Kamsa. Kamsa was the son of King Ugrasena of Mathura. He imprisoned his father and seized the kingdom. The Purana says he loved his sister Devaki greatly. When Devaki married Vasudeva, he himself drove the chariot.

As they went, a voice rang out from the sky: "Kamsa! The eighth son of this woman whom you drive so lovingly will kill you." That was all. The moment he heard those words, his love for his sister vanished. Fear possessed him. He caught Devaki by the hair and drew his sword.

Vasudeva pleaded: "I shall hand over to you every child that is born." Kamsa put them in prison. He killed the first six children of Devaki one by one. The seventh womb too was threatened. At last Krishna was born as the eighth son.

Kamsa sent many asuras, Putana, Shakatasura, Trinavarta, to kill Krishna. Each of them was destroyed by Krishna. Fear grew in Kamsa's mind more and more. In eating and in sleeping, the thought of Krishna tormented him. He saw Krishna everywhere, says the Bhagavata.

At last he planned to kill Krishna by inviting him to a bow festival. But Krishna defeated the wrestlers, climbed the platform and brought down Kamsa himself. Kamsa destroyed himself by a mind without love.

However great a king he was, for lack of love he writhed in fear like a boneless worm. Dharma scorched him; his own deeds became the sun for him.

This story may be seen not as an epic of revenge but as a lesson on the sorrow of a mind that has lost love. One who trusted fear rather than love was destroyed by his own fear.

To reflect on

When fear drives my actions, what does it do to the love I have for others?
