Explanation

In this verse Valluvar corrects a common wrong idea. Some think love is tender and useful only for virtue. But he insists that love supports courage as well.

'Aratthirke anbu saarpu' is the common belief that love helps only virtue. Valluvar gently rebukes those who believe it with the word 'ariyaar'. The reason is that love is not mere pity; it is also the power that burns at the sight of evil.

For 'maram' Parimelazhagar takes courage and the strength to destroy evil. Some commentators take 'maram' as evil deeds, and explain that love is the help even in restraining evil things. In both, the idea is close: love also gives strength to oppose evil.

When a person truly loves his family, his country, his faith, he will boil at seeing harm come to them. A mother standing up to protect her child is courage born of love.

Courage without love becomes cruelty; love without courage becomes helplessness. Only when the two join does dharma become whole. This is a deep psychological insight of the Kural.

The verse also gives a warning. In opposing evil, hatred must not possess us. The motive of true opposition must be the love that wishes even the wicked to be reformed.

The story of the sage Valmiki is told as a fine example of this. A bandit was changed by love and compassion.

A story

The Hunter Who Became Valmiki

Puranic traditions speak of the earlier life of the sage Valmiki. In works such as the Skanda Purana and the Adhyatma Ramayana he is said to have been earlier a hunter or highway robber named Ratnakara. He stopped travellers in the forest, took their wealth and supported his family.

One day the sage Narada came by that forest path. Ratnakara stopped him. Narada had no wealth. He quietly looked at him and smiled. There was neither fear nor anger in him. "Why do you do this?" Narada asked kindly.

"To support my family," said Ratnakara. "Go and ask them whether they will share the sin you commit," said Narada. "I shall tie you up until I return so that I do not run away," said the man, tied Narada to a tree and ran home.

He asked his father, he asked his wife. "You have the duty to feed us. Why should we share your sin?" they said. Those words tore his heart.

Ratnakara ran back, untied Narada and fell at his feet in tears. "Save me," he said. Narada taught him the name 'Rama'. But because of his past evil he could not utter 'Rama'. Narada told him to say 'Mara'. As he repeated it continually it became 'Rama', says the tradition.

He sat in austerity. No one knew how long it was. An anthill grew around his body. 'Valmika' means anthill. Since he came out of the anthill he was called Valmiki.

Narada's love and calm gave him the power to conquer the hunter. Neither hatred nor punishment but compassion changed that evil into good. Later he composed the great epic, the Ramayana.

When I oppose something wrong, is my strength coming from love or from anger?
