Explanation

At the end of the chapter Valluvar states his central idea finally. The life of a living being is built on the path of love. For one without love, what exists is not a living man but only a body of bone wrapped in skin.

'Anbin vazhiyadhu uyirnilai' can be understood in two ways. One: life exists by love; without love there is no life. Two: the way by which life endures is love; only for one who walks in the path of love does life become meaningful. Both fit.

'Enbu thol porththa udambu' links with the 'enbum uriyar pirarkku' at the chapter's start. There the loving give even their bones; here the loveless are left with only bone and skin. This contrasting picture closes the chapter beautifully.

Parimelazhagar explains the verse as meaning that the state of life belongs to those with love. The idea is that the loveless, though alive, are like a lifeless corpse. This is a harsh word, but it is said to stress the importance of love.

We need not take it as a word to scorn someone. It also gives the hope that even one low in love can be revived by receiving love. Love is not a mere trait but a practice that can be grown.

Link this with our daily life. However much one works and achieves, a day on which one deals lovingly with no one is an empty day. A small smile, a good word and a little help make that day alive.

One who lived this thought through his whole life was Vallalar. He extended his love to all living beings.

A story

Vallalar's Compassion

In the religious tradition of Tamil Nadu, Ramalinga Adigal, known as Vallalar, is a shining form of love. Born at Marudur in Cuddalore district, he was deep in devotion to God from childhood. His love is expressed movingly in the collection of songs called the Tiruarutpa.

A line in his song, "Vaadiya payirai kandapothellaam vaadinen", "Whenever I saw withered crops, I withered", is very famous. It tells how great his compassion was, that he grieved at seeing wilted crops. He extended his love not only to humans but to plants, creepers, animals, all.

He stressed the principle of 'jeevakarunyam', that is, compassion toward all living beings. His view was that feeding the hungry is the greatest worship.

To put this into practice, in 1867 he began the Sathya Dharma Salai at Vadalur. There an ever-burning hearth was lit to feed anyone who was hungry, without distinction of caste or creed. That hearth is said to burn continuously to this day, and many still receive food there.

Vallalar lived simply. In his songs he went beyond sectarian quarrels and showed the path of 'light worship'. At Vadalur he established the Sathya Gnana Sabha and began the way of worshipping light itself as God. The peak of his teaching was the attitude of regarding all lives as one's own life.

His life was a life-state set on the path of love. Though his body disappeared, the unextinguished hearth and his songs remain as marks of his compassion.

If a body without love is only bone and skin, the life of Vallalar, who showed love to all living beings, shines as the summit of aliveness.
