Explanation

Commentators differ slightly on the meaning of this verse. Parimelazhagar says, "The soul is joined to the body only for a way of life joined with love." Other commentators say that living in love is the purpose of soul and body living together.

The deeper meaning is: why does the soul take a body and live in this birth? To love and to do good. Without a body the soul cannot put love into practice. Without hands one cannot help; without a voice one cannot comfort.

'Enbodu iyaindha thodarbu' is the relation of the soul to the body. Since bone is the firmness of the body, he refers to the body itself by bone. The message of the verse is that the whole purpose of soul and body living together is to live in love.

This also fits the view of the Hindu tradition. The soul takes a body in many births; the lesson it has to learn in each is love, dharma and taking refuge in God. If the body is used only for pleasure, that opportunity is wasted.

So this verse does not despise the body. It says the body must be used for the right purpose. That is, the body is the instrument of love.

Karaikkal Ammaiyar gave up the beauty of her body and reached the height of love. Her life is a deep commentary on this verse.

A story

Karaikkal Ammaiyar

The Periya Puranam is the work that tells the lives of the Nayanmars. In it the story of Karaikkal Ammaiyar holds a special place. Born in a merchant family at Karaikkal with the name Punithavathi, she was deep in devotion to Shiva from childhood. She was married to Paramadattan of Nagapattinam.

One day Paramadattan sent two mangoes. Punithavathi gave one of them with a meal to a devotee of Shiva. When her husband ate, she served the other fruit; he enjoyed its taste and asked for the second one. With no other way, Punithavathi prayed to Lord Shiva. A mango appeared in her hand, and she gave it to her husband.

That fruit was far sweeter than the first, and Paramadattan became doubtful. When he asked for the truth, Punithavathi told what had happened. "Then obtain another fruit for me," the husband challenged. Punithavathi prayed again, and another fruit was given. But the husband, not thinking of her as an ordinary woman but as one with divine power, drew away from her.

Punithavathi, with no attachment to her beautiful body, prayed to Shiva for a demon form by his grace. The Lord granted her request. Her lovely body became a frame of bone.

In that form the Ammaiyar walked north toward Kailasa. Hesitating to set foot on the holy Mount Kailasa, she went on her head, says the Periya Puranam. Shiva called out, "Come, mother." She prayed, "Lord, I want a love that never leaves you; I do not want birth; if I am born, let me not forget you."

She was granted the sight of the Lord's dance and the boon of singing beneath his foot at Tiruvalangadu. Her songs are among the earliest of Tamil devotional literature.

Her life, in which she gave her beautiful body and chose a frame of bone for love of the Lord, is the essence of this verse.
