Explanation

This verse shows the difference between those who have love and those who do not. The loveless keep everything for themselves; the loving, it says, give even their bones, the firmest part of the body, to others.

In 'ellaam thamakku uriyar' there are two subtleties. The loveless neither give to others nor help them when they suffer. Second, they regard everything as their own property and wish even to make the joy of others their own.

'Enbum uriyar pirarkku' is a great metaphor. The bone is the pillar of the body. If one is ready to give even that, one is ready to give anything. Parimelazhagar explains it as giving even the bone that supports one's life for others. So the idea is that the loving sacrifice to the point of giving life.

Love here does not mean a mere feeling. When it becomes action it becomes sacrifice. A feeling may show as tears, but its true measure is seen in what it is ready to give.

We see this today too. People who give up their comfort for the family, who donate blood, who donate organs, or who care for the elderly day and night, live this verse.

When love grows of itself and crosses the limit of 'I' to reach 'we', it becomes sacrifice. In the Ramayana, the life of Jatayu is the best proof.

A story

Jatayu Who Opposed Ravana

The story of Jatayu comes in the Aranya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Jatayu was a great vulture king, known as the son of Aruna and a friend of Dasharatha. When Rama came to the forest, Jatayu met him and assured him, "I am your father's friend. I shall help to protect Sita." Rama was glad.

One day, when Rama and Lakshmana had gone after the magic deer, Ravana seized Sita and carried her away in his chariot. Sita cried out in distress. Jatayu, hearing her cry, awoke. Jatayu was very old; Ravana was young and strong and armed. Jatayu knew it well.

Yet Jatayu did not hesitate. He barred Ravana's chariot in the sky. "Ravana, this is not dharma. Let Sita go. Otherwise I shall fight you," he said. Ravana laughed. But Jatayu broke the chariot with his beak and claws, snapped Ravana's bow, killed his charioteer, and even wounded Ravana himself.

The fight lasted a long time. At last Ravana cut off Jatayu's wings with his sword. Jatayu fell to the ground. Ravana took Sita and went on.

When Rama and Lakshmana came, Jatayu's life was ebbing. He told Rama what had happened to Sita. Rama embraced him in tears. When Jatayu died, Rama performed the funeral rites for him as for his own father, says Valmiki.

Knowing that no gain could come to him, Jatayu gave his body and life for another. Though a bird, his love went beyond that of great men.

No one can give a better explanation of the verse 'enbum uriyar pirarkku'. Jatayu, who lost his wings and life for others, is honoured even today as a symbol of love.
