Word by word

giving, what another gives
do not stop or prevent

Explanation

Do not stop others from giving. When someone comes forward to give, to stop them by saying "Why give? You will lose" is like snatching food from the poor.

Both the giver and the receiver are raised up by a gift. To come between them and that good is a grave wrong.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Eighth Canto

Mahabali and Shukracharya

From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Eighth Canto. While Mahabali was performing a sacrifice, Vamana came as a small brahmin boy and asked for three steps of land. Mahabali gladly came forward to give.

His guru Shukracharya tried to stop him: "This is Vishnu himself! If you give, you will lose everything." Mahabali refused, saying that taking back a promise would be the greater disgrace. Shukra cursed him in anger, but Mahabali poured the water and made the gift.

Vamana grew into the cosmic form and measured the worlds in two steps; for the third, Mahabali offered his own head. It is the disciple who gave, not the guru who tried to stop the gift, whom the world honours, and the Lord himself stood guard at his door.

To reflect on

When someone tries to do good, do you encourage them or hold them back?
