Puranic tradition; Thirukkadavur sthala puranaMarkandeya, the Ever-Young
From Puranic tradition. The sage Mrikandu and his wife did penance for a child. Shiva asked them, "Do you want an ordinary son with a long life, or a wise son who will live only until sixteen?" They chose the wise son, and Markandeya was born.
Knowing his fate in his sixteenth year, Markandeya worshipped Shiva without pause. On the appointed day, Yama came with his noose. The boy clung tightly to the Shiva linga, and Yama's noose circled the linga too.
Then Shiva burst forth from the linga and kicked Yama down, and Markandeya received the boon of remaining sixteen forever. At Thirukkadavur, the Lord is worshipped as Kalasamhara Murti, the destroyer of death. Even death could not overcome the one who did not forget Aran.
