வால்மீகி இராமாயணம், பால காண்டத்திலிருந்து. இராமன் சிவதனுசை முறித்ததும், சீதை இராமனுக்கும், அவள் சகோதரிகள் இராமனின் தம்பியருக்கும் மணம் செய்ய முடிவானது. தசரதன் மிதிலைக்கு வந்தான்.
திருமணத்துக்கு முன், மரபுப்படி இரு குலங்களின் வரலாறும் அவையில் சொல்லப்பட வேண்டும். வசிஷ்டர் எழுந்து, பிரம்மனிலிருந்து தொடங்கி, மரீசி, காசியபர், சூரியன், மனு, இக்ஷ்வாகு, ககுத்ஸ்தன், ரகு, அஜன், தசரதன் என்று சூரிய குலத்தின் நீண்ட வரலாற்றை முழுமையாகச் சொன்னார். ஜனகனும் நிமியிலிருந்து தொடங்கும் தன் குல வரலாற்றைச் சொன்னான்.
அவையில் இருந்த எல்லாரும் இரு குலங்களின் பெருமையை நினைத்துப் போற்றினர். புதிய உறவைத் தொடங்கும் முன் தொன்மையை நினைவுகூர்ந்தது, அந்த உறவுக்கு வேரும் பொறுப்பும் தந்தது.

From the Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda. After Rama broke Shiva's bow, it was decided that Sita would marry Rama and her sisters would marry Rama's brothers. Dasharatha came to Mithila.
Before the wedding, by custom, the history of both families had to be recited in the assembly. Vasishtha rose and recited in full the long line of the solar dynasty, beginning from Brahma, through Marichi, Kashyapa, the Sun, Manu, Ikshvaku, Kakutstha, Raghu and Aja, down to Dasharatha. Janaka in turn recited his own lineage, beginning from Nimi.
Everyone in the assembly honoured the greatness of both lines. Remembering the old before beginning a new bond gave that bond both roots and responsibility.
